Maggie Q on ‘Ballard’ and the Los Angeles Duality

We got to chat with Maggie Q about playing the title character in Ballard, the upcoming TV series based on Michael Connelly’s Bosch novels. Maggie gave insights on the casting process, creating believable action sequences, and the special duality of Los Angeles. Watch to the end if you are curious about Maggie Q’s favorite karaoke tune! (It is not from Avenue Q, but does involve stage musicals.)

Ballard is a police procedural drama that picks up after the events of the Bosch: Legacy series finale. Q plays Detective Renée Ballard, the droll and determined leader of an atypical team of quirky civilians and disillusioned cops investigating cold cases around Los Angeles.

The show does an especially good job of portraying the unique yin-yang of living in L.A.: Ballard’s nights chasing serial killers and sex criminals give way to oddly-serene mornings spent surfing under the SoCal sun. The ensemble cast features Courtney Taylor, John Carroll Lynch, Victoria Moroles, and Amy Hill, with appearances by Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch.

Ballard premieres at Prime Video on July 9, 2025.
