Feeling the Love with ‘Kissing is the Easy Part’ Stars Asher Angel and Paris Berelc

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and so is another YA rom-com from Tubi. Directed by Fawzia Mirza, Kissing is the Easy Part follows straight-A student Sean (Asher Angel), who agrees to tutor the rebellious Flora (Paris Berelc) in exchange for a recommendation letter to MIT. Opposites attract, so naturally, it doesn’t take long for sparks to fly between the study buddies — but with great chemistry also comes great complications.

The rom-com film, which is based on the Wattpad novel of the same name by Christine Duann, is the latest addition to Tubi’s slate of YA originals. In addition to Angel and Berelc, it stars Jennifer Robertson (Ginny & Georgia) as Sean’s single mother. Pinoy representation continues to be front and center as well, following in the footsteps of the streamer’s recent releases Sidelined 2: Intercepted and How to Lose a Popularity Contest.

As a bonus, Kissing is the Easy Part just so happens to also be a Disney Channel reunion. Aside from their respective roles in DC’s Shazam! and Netflix’s Alexa & Katie, Angel and Berelc are best known for their Disney backgrounds — Angel starred as the titular character’s love interest in Andi Mack, while Berelc got her start as Skylar Storm on Mighty Med and Lab Rats: Elite Force.

“It was a big launching pad for both of us,” Angel tells The Nerds of Color of Disney. “It started our career[s]. I think there’s a lot of actors that look back on past experiences like, ‘Oh, it was fun while it lasted.’ I will never shy away from previous characters [I’ve] played that have had an impact on people.”

“It was my first job ever when I booked Mighty Med,” Berelc adds. “Jake Short and Bradley Steven Perry were veterans, so I was really lucky because I got to learn a lot from them. It taught me how to memorize really fast. Also, I got to flip around and do gymnastics. I got to be in a superhero suit… I’m very grateful.”

Ahead of the release of Kissing is the Easy Part, The Nerds of Color chatted with Angel and Berelc about the “iconic” scenes they’re most excited for fans to see, their past roles, and some juicy casting rumors swirling around the DC Universe. Check out the full interview below:
