Octavia Spencer on ‘Lost Women of Alaska,’ ‘Feds,’ and True-Crime Storytelling

Octavia Spencer executive produces and narrates the Lost Women franchise and Feds. Lost Women of Alaska consists of three episodes, all streaming on HBO Max. Season 2 of Feds will begin airing weekly on Wednesday, March 4, at 9/8c on ID.

Feds continues to offer unprecedented access to the FBI, featuring exclusive interviews with FBI agents and the previously untold stories of high-profile, dangerous and unusual cases as recounted by investigators, informants, undercover operatives and victims. The series unveils the brilliant tactics, tough judgment calls, and relentless dedication that make the FBI the world’s most elite crime-fighting force. From a shocking kidnapping hoax to an elaborate baby-selling scheme, each episode offers front-row seats to the real-life drama and emotion of major investigations.

I spoke with Spencer about her perspective on true crime and how they choose which cases to highlight.

This season of Lost Women will focus on the murders of Veronica Abouchuk and Kathleen Jo Henry, who were killed in 2018 and 2019, to bring attention to the cacophony of Indigenous voices seemingly lost without a trace in the remote Alaskan landscape.

“The way we choose stories are the ones that haven’t been told, and that’s why I think they’re so compelling, because we just haven’t seen the market oversaturated with these stories. It’s sad for the families and those who were victimized, but we also work with amazing journalists. We have an amazing production team that sits through and calls the information. It’s compelling, but it also is these are crimes that actually happened. These are victims who can no longer speak for themselves or seek justice,” she expressed. “Family members who, some, don’t have closure. Sadly, there are thousands of cases out there like the ones that we’ve chosen to highlight, and we will [continue to] be drawn to tell those stories that are underrepresented for communities that have been marginalized. I think that’s the difference for the way we choose stories.”
