Cruel Summer premieres on Tuesday, April 20 with a special two-hour event at 9 PM EDT/PDT on Freeform. New episodes will continue to air after that on Tuesdays at 10 PM EDT/PDT. Along with Olivia Holt, the series stars Chiara Aurelia, Michael Landes, Froy Gutierrez, Harley Quinn Smith, Allius Barnes, Blake Lee, and Brooklyn Sudano.
From showrunner Tia Napolitano, Cruel Summer tells the stories of Kate Wallis, the popular girl with a charmed life, and Jeanette Turner, the nerdy wannabee. When Kate goes missing, everything points to Jeanette’s guilt and she is accused of having something to do with the other girl’s disappearance; but is Kate really who she seems to be? The show takes place over three summers in the 90s and is told from multiple points of view, making the audience question all perceptions. How can one girl go from being a sweet and awkward outlier to the most despised person in America?
Holt is known for her starring role in Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and Disney XD series, Kickin’ It. She can most recently be seen in Freeform’s Turkey Drop. Along with her amazing acting career, she also has a successful music career after releasing her EP OLIVIA in 2016. On April 2, she shared “love on you.“
Episode one is titled, “Happy Birthday, Jeanette Turner.” Episode two, “A Smashing Good Time,” celebrates the annual Skylin Garden Club Party! The official synopsis for the episode also shares, “Year after year after year, the residents of Skylin struggle with the truth around what happened to Kate, keeping their secrets buried and maintaining appearances.”
I got to ask the actress about her new series, specifically how it’s different from her past projects and the unique storytelling aspect. Watch the video to see what she had to say!
