Alyson Hannigan on Loving Her ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Journey

Alyson Hannigan is part of the Dancing With The Stars celebrity cast for season 32! She is partnered with professional dancer Sasha Farber. You can watch new episodes live on Tuesdays at 8 PM ET on ABC as well as Disney+, and stream on Hulu.

I spoke with the actress about her favorite dance of the competition so far, Taylor Swift week, why Sasha is her perfect partner, and more. Keep reading for everything she shared!

I loved your dance in last week’s episode, “Most Memorable Year.” Which theme or dance has been the most rewarding for you so far? Seeing you bring them to life week after week has been incredible.
Alyson Hannigan: Well, definitely my most memorable year was my favorite dance thus far. I mean, obviously, being able to dedicate the dance to my husband was just something I never dreamt in my life I would be able to do and it was so meaningful for both of us. I am gonna be eternally grateful to Sasha for giving us that. Also, I don’t know if it’s maybe because I’ve been in it long enough but something clicked in that really changed things for me where instead of sort of being concerned about the choreography and the this and that, it clicked in finally. I was like, “Oh, this is probably what everyone started at,” like, where they just know how to learn choreography, but I finally understood it. So then, I could really try to work on the other details and the other technical aspects of dance, and try to make my arms not look like a windmill, you know, more like a dancer’s arms.

It was so beneficial that there were so many pros there that week because I mean, I was just asking everybody who would talk to me for tips and advice because I know that I’ll never be the best dancer on the show, obviously. I mean, I’m probably never gonna be the best dancer in the room, but I’m really excited that I can feel the improvement within myself. I’m doing massive amounts of homework and I just eat, drink, and sleep it. I come home from rehearsal and I start watching videos, and I’m loving every minute of it. So, I just don’t wanna leave going, “Oh, I guess I could have worked harder.” I’m working the hardest I can and I think last week I really felt like, oh, something big kind of unlocked, which I hope continues. I hope it wasn’t just a fluke for that week. But it’s just been such an incredible experience and I’m just loving the journey. I’m so grateful to all my fans that keep voting for me so that I can keep doing it.

You’re not going anywhere anytime soon. I heard there’s going to be a Taylor Swift week. I’m a huge Swiftie, so I am beyond excited. I’m not gonna ask you to confirm or deny it, but if you could pick any Taylor Swift song and dance to do together, which would you choose and why?
Look, Taylor Swift is my Mirrorball. I don’t need to get to the finale, my dream is to make it to that possible night, that is my goal and I am fine to go home after that. That is my dream, to make it that far. It’s maybe an ambitious dream because it is late in the season, but that is what I’m working towards and that would be my trophy. I would dance to any song and I’m so unaware of like — I say, “Oh, what about this song?” And then Sasha will be like, “Well, that’s that style and you can’t,” and I’m like, “I don’t know what style goes to what dance.” So that’s beyond my knowledge. I haven’t gotten there yet.

That would be me too, don’t worry.
First of all, I can’t pick a favorite Taylor Swift song, it’s like you can’t pick a favorite child. You just can’t pick a favorite Taylor Swift song, so any of them. Obviously if, let’s say, hypothetically, I had to fill out some paperwork at the beginning about song selection, I probably would have said — well, I mean, “willow” is obviously a great song, so there’s that. But then there’s just any other song that… there’s no answer. Anything, anything, I just would love to be there and I have also already put in requests for tickets for the audience just in case I’m not there. I couldn’t dream of a better theme.

I loved having that little Taylor fangirl moment with you. That was everything to me.
Yeah, we’re not supposed to wear any clothes during rehearsals with logos or whatever and I keep trying to sneak in my concert sweatshirt. I think I just got one in, accidentally. They didn’t notice that it was a concert sweatshirt, but I keep trying. I’ve worn some of the bracelets I got at her concert that fans gave me, I’ve worn those in interviews and I’m like, “It’s just my bracelets, what do you mean?” In fact, the first night because I got a 13 score, my friend said, “Hey, it’s okay, it’s Taylor’s favorite number,” so I was like, “Yes, I got a 13!”

That was your sign from Taylor that you got this.
I was like, “Hey, maybe I’ll get a 22.”

I have to say you and Sasha are the perfect partners, you are amazing together. Why do you think that is? What do you think makes it work so well between you and Sasha?
Sasha’s great. I mean, I agree Sasha is the perfect partner for me. I appreciate him so much and you know, Deena Katz is a brilliant person. She just knows. You get to know her a little bit, like I just had a conversation but she has this amazing ability to know who’s gonna click with who well. Obviously, there’s height stuff too, but I mean, she’s been doing it for 32 seasons, she knows what she’s doing and I think that he brings such joy to the process. He’s funny. He’s fun. He’s also not frustrated that I came in with no experience.

He was a little disappointed though because there was a movie I did where there’s a big dance sequence and he was like, “No, you danced in that,” and I was like, “Oh Sasha, that was a dance double.” He got his heart broke. I was like, “Oh, wait, do I not get a dance double for this week?” Our sense of humor really aligns. I think we both want to bring joy to the process and he is really, obviously, good at hiding frustration, I’ve only seen it a few times. It’s such a rollercoaster of emotions, this whole journey. I am enjoying all of it so much and it’s so cool that I can be present in what I know is a lifetime memory. It’s such a gift and it’s one of my favorite jobs I’ve ever done. It’s so rewarding in so many ways, I had no idea. I mean, I knew it would be challenging and all the things but it’s been so incredible on so many levels. I feel so lucky that I’m still here and get to do it for another week, and hopefully longer, knock on wood.
