When The Philippou Brothers showed the world that low-budget original concepts can make a huge splash on the industry with their incredible horror film Talk to Me, the world waited with baited breath to see what these two horror nerds would come up with next. They didn’t disappoint. Bring Her Back is one of the scariest films you’ll see this year, but also one of the most emotional. So it was a true honor to talk to the horror auteurs, as well as the incredible cast of the film: Sora Wong, Billy Barratt, and Jonah Wren Phillips.
Not only is the movie a feat from a narrative standpoint. It’s absolutely a terrific film and one of the best I’ve seen this year, for sure. However, more than that, it features a character that most films don’t ordinarily focus on: a visually impaired Asian girl named Piper (played by Wong). For the Philippou Brothers to have one of its central characters be played by a genuinely visually impaired actress, and an Asian one at that, is not only a huge win for representation, but a genuine calling for other filmmakers to keep such characters and actors in mind for future films. Wong’s involvement is living proof that authenticity is achievable by giving true-to-life actors a true shot, despite their differences, rather than just pulling your typical Hollywood A-List talent. The same is obviously true for Barratt and Phillips, who also do phenomenal work in this film, playing the characters of Andy and Oliver.
These are not easy characters to play, and the movie gets especially challenging when they have to do some of the more gruesome tasks and physical stunts in the film. So the fact that these actors not only crush it, but do so opposite Oscar-nominee Sally Hawkins, is nothing short of astonishing! Take a look at what they, and writer/directors Danny and Michael Philippou have to say about their incredible film, right here:
Bring Her Back arrives in theaters this Friday, May 30! Look out for our review of the film, later this week!
