Alex Segura on ‘Enemy of My Enemy: A Daredevil Marvel Crime Novel’

Alex Segura has created a fascinating story focused on Matt Murdock and a major murder case fresh out of Hell’s Kitchen, where he must also juggle his alter ego Daredevil while facing down familiar foes like Punisher and Bullseye. We had the chance to speak with Segura on his new novel.

Reading Enemy of My Enemy: A Daredevil Marvel Crime Novel was an interesting experience, allowing me to enjoy the world of Matt Murdock/Daredevil in a very in-depth way. It follows the book Breaking the Dark: A Jessica Jones Marvel Crime Novel in the new Marvel Crime book series. While we’ve had numerous comics and streaming shows over the years to get to know this character, this format allowed me to enjoy the inner thoughts and decisions Murdock made with deeper understanding. With a detailed look at the character’s various struggles and a surprise dual POV, Segura provides readers with a dynamic look at Matt Murdock’s complex bond with Punisher, forcing us to reevaluate our perception of both characters through new lenses.

Quotes have been edited for length.

Earlier this week, we had a chance to talk with author Alex Segura. When discussing how this project came his way, Segura opened up about his career and how it came together:

Segura: I really loved the idea of blending my two careers as a comic book writer, but also as a writer of crime fiction. And Daredevil is so perfectly suited for a crime novel. I mean, most of his comics are very noir and gritty and street level and grounded. So once we talked that through, the ideas starting popping into my mind.

NOC: How do you sort through all of that? There’s so much Daredevil lore and history and story and characters to include. How do you pick and choose which ones need prominence, which ones don’t?

Segura: The big challenge of a book like this is you want it to not only be appealing to a hardcore Daredevil fan who’s been buying the comics forever, but also to someone that might not be super familiar with daredevil and only knows the character and his world from the tv show or other things or maybe they’ve read some comics but ,they’re not like a diehard. So my first thought was what is an iconic daredevil story to me? Like what it the best like Daredevil 101 for a new reader but also appealing to you know, a big time Daredevil fan. So for me, that’s Matt struggling with the courtroom, having Matt as the lawyer, dealing with a case both as Matt Murdock attorney but also as daredevil, and what are the characters that, to me, say this is a Daredevil story.
