Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi Brings ‘Predator: Badlands’ Home

This past year director Dan Trachtenberg, who brought us Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers introduced us to the franchise’s first Yautja protagonist, Dek, in Predator: Badlands! Portrayed by breakout star, Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, both Trachtenberg and Koloamatangi infused pathos and complexity into Dek, bringing us something completely different; a sympathetic and richer side to Yautja culture.

With Badlands now on Hulu and hitting 4K on February 17, we were invited to a very special event at Killer Fitness in Burbank, CA to work out like a Yautja, and (more importantly) get in a terrific chat with Koloamatangi.

As a Samoan-Tongan actor, Koloamatangi had his work cut out for him in an industry of franchises that generally does not favor newer actors of similar heritage. Not only did he have to headline a blockbuster action film this early into his career, but he had to do so in a heavy suit, with his face covered the entire time, in an imaginary language, and a readily daring, fully committed Elle Fanning strapped to his back. This of course meant he had to be in the best physical condition imaginable, especially to perform some of the intense stunts in the film.

In the spirit of our impending workout, we were able to get some insight from Koloamatangi about how he physically trained for the role of Dek, and what tips he might have for some of us who could… well… stand to do better.

Check out what he had to say here:

And don’t miss Predator: Badlands, on Hulu now, and 4K on February 17!
