They might not be Superman, but they’re still heroes! Today, medical professionals are being questioned more than ever before by everything and everyone, from people on TikTok and YouTube, to government officials attempting to discredit science and medical facts. During times like this, folks need to be reminded of all the medical community does for people, and the proven scientific expertise they actually provide everyone for the benefit of all mankind. This is why it’s the perfect time for the return of one of the best, most heartfelt medical comedies of all: Scrubs.
During its run from 2001 to 2010, audiences laughed and cried at the antics of Scrubs, with JD, Turk, Elliot, Dr. Cox, and Carla. The show made an impact on folks, perfectly balancing both the hilariously silly and surreal moments between its charming cast of misfits, and the deeper, more human moments that come with the hardships of being doctor. Thanks to the specific nerdiness of JD and Turk’s heartwarming friendship, it developed a strong geek following, thanks to numerous references to Star Wars, Dungeons and Dragons, Batman, and more. However, most importantly, thanks to creator Bill Lawrence’s commitment to medical accuracy, it paid homage to real doctors and nurses in the medical community, being incredibly sincere about the difficult challenges of their day-to-day lives on physical, psychological, and emotional levels.
With the series’ return, we were incredibly lucky to sit down with some of the POC cast members of the latest season, such as newcomers Amanda Morrow (“Dashana”) and Layla Mohammadi (“Amara”), and, of course, cast veterans Judy Reyes (“Carla”) and John C. McGinley (“Dr. Cox”). Here’s what they had to say about the return of the series, and how it honors those in medicine today:
Scrubs returns to televison tonight on ABC, and tomorrow on Hulu!
