‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Cast on Beginning a New Chapter of an Iconic Legacy

The highly underrated Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy set the bar high for what the modern-day movie franchise should be, thanks to its serialized storytelling and Andy Serkis’ brilliant performance capture and motion-capture performances as Caesar, an evolved chimp raised in captivity and later experimented on as a test subject who would lead his fellow prisoners in a revolution against their human oppressors.

The Evolution of a New Era Begins in ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’

Any director would find it challenging to follow up on the highly underrated Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy, especially when said trilogy was perfect from start to finish. Each successive film from the legacy started by Rupert Wyatt and completed by Matt Reeves, with Andy Serkis’ motion capture performance as Caesar, was better than the last. So rather than just pick up where the trilogy left off, Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes marks the beginning of a new era that takes the conflict to new places while deepening the mythology created by its predecessors.

NOC Review: ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ is Fun Enough But Toothless

So Venom happened. Back in 2018, the movie came out. And it was fun. Dumb, for sure. But fun enough. It was a movie that benefitted off Tom Hardy’s charisma and greater understanding of what this movie franchise really should be — a ‘00s era tongue-in-cheek, Army of Darkness-toned camp fest released in 2018. And for the most part it was a success with audiences. But for comic book movies in a post-Dark Knight, post-MCU era, I can honestly say it doesn’t register high among my list of greatest superhero films. It frankly doesn’t register at all. While I had fun with the film, to me, that first film set a relatively low bar for its own franchise.
