‘Y: The Last Man’ Coming to FX on Hulu in September

Late last week, FX Networks, released a promotional video showcasing their epic slate of current and upcoming shows for FX on Hulu, to remind everyone why they are one of the biggest powerhouses in the world of basic-cable original programming today! And one of the key upcoming exclusives they slyly featured was for the upcoming adaptation of DC’s classic series Y: The Last Man. You can check out some very brief glimpses of the series at the 0:30 mark in the promo below:

For the uninitiated, Y: The Last Man is an INCREDIBLE series by the legendary Brian K. Vaughn, one of the best writers in the industry today and ever! It takes place in an apocalyptic world where all living creatures with a Y chromosome all die except for the central character, Yorick Brown, and his monkey, Ampersand.

The series chronicles the duo’s adventures trying to survive, as well as the mission to figure out why Yorick has survived, to see if there may be a key to saving the rest of humanity within his biological makeup.

Per FX’s official press release:

A drama series based on DC Comics’ acclaimed series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, Y: The Last Man traverses a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event decimates every mammal with a Y chromosome but for one cisgender man and his pet monkey. The series follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better.

The ensemble cast features Diane Lane as “Congresswoman Jennifer Brown,” Ashley Romans as “Agent 355,” Ben Schnetzer as “Yorick Brown,” Olivia Thirlby as “Hero Brown,” Amber Tamblyn as “Kimberly Cunningham,” Marin Ireland as “Nora Brady,” Diana Bang as “Dr. Allison Mann,” Elliot Fletcher as “Sam Jordan” and Juliana Canfield as “Beth Deville.” All episodes of the season will be directed by women and the production has a significant number of female department heads, including both DPs, the production designer, costume designer, casting director, editors, stunt coordinator and more.

Eliza Clark serves as showrunner and executive producer along with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force, Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda, Louise Friedberg, Brian K. Vaughan and Melina Matsoukas. Nellie Reed serves as Producer. Y: The Last Man is produced by FX Productions.

Y: The Last Man is a 60-issue science fiction comic book series published beginning in 2002. It received three Eisner Awards, and was nominated for the first Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story for Y: The Last Man, Volume 10.

The road to a live-action adaptation for the series has been long. At one point it was being pursued by WB for a film starring Shia LaBeouf. However it was eventually cancelled. Which I think is for the best because the series works better as a TV show. And given FX’s amazing work on shows like Legion, which was incredibly ahead of its time, and has went on to influence other comic book based shows, like WandaVision, I’m excited to see what they’ve got up their sleeves for this long-awaited, highly anticipated Vaughn adaptation!

Y: The Last Man premieres exclusively to FX on Hulu Monday, September 13!
