Updates on ‘The Last of Us’ from Summer Game Fest

The long rumored remake of The Last of Us: Part 1 arrives on the PS5 later this year on September 2 and PC at a later date. Announced at this year’s Summer Games Fest, Naughty Dog Co-President and The Last of Us creative director, Neil Druckmann spoke with Geoff Keighley about the remake, the announced multiplayer spin-off, and the upcoming TV series after the new trailer aired.

Druckmann described the upcoming changes they brought to the remake to provide a more “modern gameplay” feel by implementing updated animations, updated graphics, 60 FPS performance with additional combat options and a new enemy A.I. system similar to 2020’s The Last of Us: Part 2.

Druckermann also unveiled concept art for the upcoming The Last of Us multiplayer game. First announced as just a multiplayer mode for Part 2, Druckmann explained that Naughty Dog has been working on it for the last two years and even though they are not quite yet ready to reveal the game they did want to share some updates about its production.

He expressed how their ambition had grown and that the game is now “as big as any of our single-player games that we’ve done, and in some ways bigger.” It will have its own unique story, a new cast of characters, and taking place in a different location in the United States. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until next year to learn more about the game.

The last update for the franchise was the first official look at HBO’s upcoming adaptation of The Last of Us. Druckmann showed off the first official photo from the series that showed Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie hiding in the museum from Chapter 3 of the game. He also stated that filming for the series would be finishing this week and we will be hearing more news about it soon.
