Elaine Miles Speaks Out and Copes with Humor Following Encounter with ICE

On November 3, actor Elaine Miles was waiting at a bus stop in Redmond, Washington, when four U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers approached her, demanding to see her ID. Miles, a registered member of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, stood her ground and in what – as she described – “felt like a lifetime, but it was only maybe 30 minutes, 45 minutes long,” they were arguing.

‘The Last of Us’ Just Featured a Pearl Jam Song, Time Paradox Ensues

It’s been well documented on this site that I’m not much of a gamer. It’s is also well documented that I am a huge and unabashed Pearl Jam fan. Those two facts about me collided during last night’s viewing of the most recent episode of The Last of Us on HBO.

Between Vengeance and Love at ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Press Conference

Nothing in the video game space has broken my heart nearly as much as The Last of Us Parts I and II. NOC Review: ‘The Last of Us’ is a Game Changer

If yesterday, you were to tell me the best video game adaptation ever put to any screen was Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the truth of the matter would sadly be that you’d likely be accurate. The subgenre has been suffering ever since the first Super Mario Bros movie from 1993 caused Nintendo to embargo any film rights to their games for at least three decades.

Trailer for ‘The Last of Us’ Showcases a Faithful Adaptation of a Masterpiece Game

With all the snobbery online today, people will likely get triggered by the use of the term “masterpiece.” Granted because people do have a tendency to throw the term around a lot, even if something is truly a masterpiece to them subjectively, someone has to cynically rain on their parade and go “that’s not a real masterpiece” (which is obnoxious by the way). However, I frankly believe no one will object to me calling The Last of Us video games masterpieces. They truly are. And at CCXP, HBO and Naughty Dog revealed a trailer for the video game adaptation that shows that the masterpiece is finally coming to life in stunning live-action.

Production Begins on HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’

I realize there’s been controversy from haters who disliked the second game. But to be quite frank, I’m not one of those people, and for my money Neil Druckman’s The Last of Us remains one of my favorite video games of all time! It is a beautiful story about humanity, love, loss, mistakes, regrets and redemption. The relationship between Joel and Ellie is one of the most beautiful human stories ever developed in any game.

Grumpy Vietnamese Guy’s Favorite Video Games of 2013

Needing quarters to take the bus to work, my dad would take me along with him to Thompson’s Arcade to use the change machine. Located on Minnehaha and Lake, it was a dim, small, rectangular room owned by Christians. My dad would slide his dollar bills into the change machine, collect the majority of coins for his bus rides, then hand me two to four quarters to spend on games. Once in a while, some stranger would ask me my ethnicity, then hand me an educational comic in the Vietnamese language about Jesus and sins and what have you. I would politely accept the pamphlet, then go back to shooting demons or jumping over throwing stars.

Fast forward maybe three decades, and we’re here at my grumpy Vietnamese guy’s favorite video games of 2013. This is of course highly subjective, so please — don’t give me any “why isn’t Bioshock Infinite on your list?” (For the record, I played it, and I didn’t like it all that much). I’m a father with a full time job and an arts career to manage, so my play time is sporadic and short. I don’t play online multiplayer at all. My main rubrics were: how many times did I play through? How immersed was I in the game world? How much fun did I have? How did I feel about the characters? How is the overall design of the game and the experience?

And I’m not justifying problematic elements found in these games — I play to get immersed in different worlds, and I usually play one game at a time obsessively until I get bored or frustrated — which means playing games tend to be long slogs for me. I don’t remember 100% everything that happened in each one. And there are slight spoilers found herein.

These are in no particular order.
