The story isn’t over yet folks! Inspired by The Last of Us Part II, Max is moving forward with the second season of last year’s epic blockbuster hit series, The Last of Us. We reported a bit earlier this year that Kaitlyn Dever had joined the cast as Abby. But today, we got our first official looks at Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey returning as Joel and Ellie for Season 2!
Revealed among a ton of news for Max’s upcoming slate today, the streaming platform dropped our first looks at an older Joel and Ellie for the upcoming season. For those who aren’t familiar with the story of The Last of Us Part II, it takes place several years after the final events of the first game (in this case the first season). Revealing anything else would be a massive spoiler. But from the news about production so far, it sounds like (similarly to the first season) Season 2 will be sticking very closely to the narrative of the game.

Max also confirmed the second season will be arriving next year. And in addition to Dever, several other cast announcements have been made this year including Isabela Merced playing Dina, Beef star Young Mazino playing Jesse, and a slew of wonderful actors including Danny Ramirez, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, and the legendary Catherine O’Hara.
The Last of Us Part II was released in 2020, and proved to be one of the most divisive games ever developed (largely due to the sentiments of conservative, gatekeeping, toxic behavior in the gaming community). It touched on incredibly complex themes of identity, vengeance, and family, and featured some wonderful LGBTQ+ representation as well. But most of all, thematically, it was a masterpiece in storytelling and character development, really giving us a tough but emotionally resonant narrative that — if you were strong enough — had equally strong emotional payoff.
I anticipate The Last of Us Season 2 to be met with similar reception.
