‘Trap’ Trailer Finds Josh Hartnett at the Center of a Dark and Sinister Event

Warner Bros. has released the newest trailer for M. Night Shyamalan‘s latest twisted thriller, Trap. The film stars Josh Hartnett as a father — and probable serial killer known as the Butcher — who takes his teen daughter (Ariel Donoghue) to attend a concert of her favorite pop star (Saleka Shyamalan), where he realizes its actually an elaborate trap set up by the police to arrest him.

While the trailer doesn’t reveal too much that we don’t already know, we get to see how swift the Butcher. It’s clear that the concert may be as close as the authorities will get to arresting The Butcher. But there’s also a reason why the serial killer has never been arrested, as the trailer sees how he creates opportunities and exposes vulnerabilities to stay steps ahead of the police.

As the trailer progresses, we overhear an unseen criminal profiler who seems to have intimate knowledge of The Butcher. The killer is calculated he is with his movements as he seizes upon moments to obtain police radios so that he can hear their strategies or create distractions using explosives simmering in frying oil. Of course, there’s the old school route where he can just pull the fire alarm.

The trailer also seems to hint at the possibility of the film taking place in two different settings. Though the concert venue serves as the main stage, the trailer also shows us the police infiltrating a house that may or may not belong to the Butcher. The use of vertical lines can also be seen, which gives us a sense that we aren’t seeing the full picture.

Trap also stars Hayley Mills and Allison Pill. The film is produced by Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock and M. Night Shyamalan. The executive producer is Steven Schneider.

The director of photography is Sayombhu Mukdeeprom (Call Me by Your Name). The production designer is Debbie de Villa (The Hating Game). It is edited by Noëmi Preiswerk. The original songs are written, produced and performed by Saleka Night Shyamalan. The music is by Herdĭs Stefănsdŏttir (Knock at the Cabin) and the music supervisor is Susan Jacobs (Old). The costume designer is Caroline Duncan (Old). The VFX supervisor is Javier Marcheselli (Dune). The casting is by Douglas Aibel (Asteroid City).

Trap opens in theaters on August 2, 2024.
