“The Ballad of the Witches’ Road” is an evocative ensemble earworm heard throughout Marvel Studios’ latest streaming hit, Agatha All Along. Created by EGOT winners and songwriting duo Robert and Kristen-Anderson Lopez, the song plays a crucial part in the series’ larger narrative while also taking a life of its own in different episodes.
The Nerds of Color had a chance to talk to the Lopezes about what it was like to come back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They also spoke about how they find the fun in the challenges of creating songs that tie back to the musical backbone of the show while also bantering who is better at creating melodies. They also offer a very small tease — if you can even call it that — of what to expect from Frozen 3.
Three years after being trapped in the town of Westview, New Jersey, at the end of the miniseries WandaVision (2021), the witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) escapes with the help of a goth teen — who is later revealed to be Wanda Maximoff’s son, Billy (Joe Locke) – who wishes to face the trials of the legendary Witches’ Road. Without her magical powers, Agatha and Billy form a new coven of witches to face the trials, while contending with some of Agatha’s old enemies such as the Salem Seven.
Agatha All Along also stars Debra Jo Rupp, Aubrey Plaza, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Okwui Okpokwasili, Patti LuPone, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, and Miles Gutierrez-Riley.
Created by Jac Schaeffer, new episodes of Agatha All Along debut on Wednesdays at 6:00 PM PST/9:00 PM EST.
