It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt… or falls in love. A new generation of Cruel Intentions is headed to Prime Video on November 21.
Based on the 1999 film of the same name (which is itself an adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons), the YA drama series centers on a pair of ruthless step-siblings — Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess) — students at an elite college who will do whatever it takes to preserve their high status and keep their reputations intact.
Cruel Intentions is created by Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher (I Know What You Did Last Summer), who serve as co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers. In addition to Hook and Burgess, the series stars Savannah Lee Smith as Annie, Sara Silva as Cece, John Harlan Kim as Blaise, Khobe Clarke as Scott, and Brooke Lena Johnson as Beatrice. Additionally, Sean Patrick Thomas — who played Ronald in the 1999 flick— has a new role as Professor Hank Chadwick.
To celebrate the show’s upcoming release, The Nerds of Color chatted with the cast and creators about what they’re most excited for viewers to see (hint: there will be a pool scene), how the new series separates itself from the cult classic flick, their favorite scenes to shoot, and so much more.
“I was a really big fan of the [1999] film,” Hook says. “I think the first time I watched it, I was in, like, seventh grade. Maybe a little too young for it, but… [laughs]. It’s funny, because before watching Cruel Intentions, all I had really been exposed to was, like, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. So, that totally changed my world.”
