Stephanie Hsu and Zosia Mamet on Their ‘Laid’ Characters and Improv Moments

Stephanie Hsu and Zosia Mamet star as Ruby and AJ in Laid. All eight episodes of the new comedy series drop December 19 on Peacock.

A woman finds out her former lovers are dying in unusual ways and must go back through her sex timeline to confront her past in order to move forward – “Laid” is a f**cked up rom-com where the answer to “why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?” is a resounding “Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.”

“It’s not gonna be me, it’s gonna be Zosia. I will talk about Zosia’s improv all day,” Hsu, who is also an executive producer, expressed. “Zosia and Andre Hyland specifically are like, I just don’t even understand. Yeah, it’s just crazy. I can be like, ‘I’m gonna pop out of a corner,’ but you have full sentences and dreamscapes in your words. When I first watched the season, or even when we were going through edits, I heard the rogue in episode two at the wedding, AJ is flirting with a guy, and off camera goes, ‘Oh my God, you invent flavors of toothpaste? That’s so wild,’ and I knew, I knew that she made that up and it’s my favorite line in the whole show.”

“I mean, it was not hard to ever be impressed by Stephanie. I was impressed every single day that we worked together,” Mamet told me. “It’s true and it was… honestly, we could talk for hours, I think both of us, making this show was just such an incredible joy. It was such an embarrassment of riches across the board and every single person we worked with was so brilliant and generous. We did get to have these incredible moments of really sinking our teeth in as actors and also these amazing moments of just being so silly and making each other laugh.”

We talked about which other “flipped” genre they would want to see their characters in and moments when they were impressed by each other.
