Live-Action ‘Moana’ Trailer Sets Sail

Disney has released the first trailer for its live-action Moana. It may only be a teaser, but it offers a glimpse of what’s to come and showcases the power in Catherine Lagaʻaia’s voice as she steps into the role of the titular wayfinder.

Moana follows in the footsteps of Disney’s other live-action reimaginings, retelling the 2016 animated favorite with a new cast, practical worlds, and a fresh live-action lens.

The trailer relies on nostalgia by sharing some of the more familiar and iconic clips from the animated film and gives it life. Basically, if you wanted to see Moana walk along the peak of Montouni, see Baby Moana pick up a that pretty pick seashell offer by Ocean, the villagers of Montouni, Wayfinders sailing the ocean, and the mischievous shapeshifting Maui (Dwayne Johnson) as a hawk flying through the sky or as a bug and then an iguana scuttling through a jungle. And we can’t forget about the intimidating yet adorable tribe of Kakamora.

Everything in the trailer is set against Lagaʻaia as wayfinder Moana, who sings the powerful line “I Am Moana.”

In addition to Lagaʻaia and Johnson, the Moana cast includes Auckland, New Zealand, native John Tui as Moana’s no-nonsense father, Chief Tui; Samoan-New Zealander Frankie Adams, who portrays Moana’s playful and strong-willed mother, Sina; and Rena Owen, from Bay of Islands, New Zealand, as Moana’s revered Gramma Tala.

While the live-action reimagining of the beloved Oscar-nominated animated adventure sees Moana (Catherine Lagaʻaia) answering the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people, it will be interesting to see if it adds any new narrative elements to help distinguish itself from its animated counterpart.

Of course, it could play it beat by beat like the photorealistic animated Lion King, or add layers like The Little Mermaid, or go as far as providing a fresh twist like the recent Lilo and Stitch.

Well just have to wait and see.

And more importantly, much like the animated film, the live-action reimagining features a cast rooted in Pacific Islander talent.

The film is directed by Emmy and Tony winner Thomas Kail (Hamilton) and produced by Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, with Kail, Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth, and original Moana voice actor Auliʻi Cravalho on board as executive producers. Moana sails into U.S. theaters on July 10, 2026.
