Talking ‘Spaceballs,’ ‘Rocky,’ and He-Man on the Amazon MGM CinemaCon Red Carpet

Last week was a whirlwind of excitement, as CinemaCon lit up Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas! Though the annual trade show is a business-forward event for theater owners and exhibitors, the major film studios were present to talk about the exciting slate of films expected to light up screens for all larger and smaller theaters across the country. One of the larger presentations of the week was Amazon MGM Studios. With much gratitude to Amazon MGM, The Nerds of Color was invited to cover the red carpet for their presentation to talk to the stars and filmmakers behind some of their biggest films of the year!

When Amazon acquired MGM Studios in 2022, it inherited a century’s worth of incredible characters and stories that literally built Hollywood. From Bond to Rocky Balboa, MGM’s legacy has been one of legend. Now, between this year and next, they’re bringing even more excitement to the big screen. In the works are films like Michael B. Jordan’s remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, an updated retelling of A Colt is My Passport from the director of The Raid, Gareth Evans, the long anticipated sequel to Mel Brooks’ classic, Spaceballs, and of course, the megabudget film adaptation of Masters of the Universe.

With so many projects coming and so much talent to behold, we were incredibly lucky to get to talk to some of the big names involved in the upcoming projects, including Ynon Kreiz (CEO of Mattel), Josh Gad (co-star and co-writer) and Josh Greenbaum (director) of Spaceballs: The New One, stars of the upcoming biopic, I Play Rocky, AnnaSophia Robb and Anthony Ippolito, director David Leitch (John Wick, The Fall Guy) for his new film How to Rob a Bank, and legendary comedy stars Daphne Zuniga and Rick Moranis, reprising their roles as Queen Vespa and Lord Helmet in Spaceballs: The New One!

It was an incredible honor to speak to all of them; particularly Moranis and Zuniga, who returned to the world of film for their long-awaited sequel after being absent from our screens for decades. Take a look at what everyone had to say right here:

I also need to say we had some incredible interviews with the writers of Spaceballs: The New One, Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, as well as I Play Rocky stars Stephan James (who plays Carl Weathers), and Kiki Seto (who plays Talia Shire). Unfortunately, technical issues prevented the audio from recording properly for those specific conversations, which is a true shame, given they had some incredible responses to some tough questions. We can only hope to speak to them all again sometime in the future to make up for the loss.
