‘Masters of the Universe’ Stars Christian Vunipola and Jon Xue Zhang Save Eternia

With Masters of the Universe currently lighting up the screens, fans are going crazy seeing some of the iconic heroes and villains of Eternia finally come to life! With favorites like Fisto and Man at Arms finally making their big budget, big screen debut, we just had to know what it was like to be buddies with He-Man himself! Thankfully, we were given the opportunity to ask stars Christian Vunipola and Jon Xue Zhang about their experience becoming masters of the universe!

One of the coolest things about Masters of the Universe was the fact that they managed to get really terrific POC actors to pitch perfectly portray some of the film’s scene stealing roles. Idris Elba took the role of Duncan. Camila Mendes brought Teela to life! And of course, Zhang and Vunipola embody the roles of Ram Man and Hussein (Adam’s hilarious roommate).

The film naturally pays tribute to the ‘80s era of sugary cereals and Saturday morning cartoons, with a very tongue in cheek approach to the material, while still knowingly showing its love for the characters and the mythology. In doing so, director Travis Knight strikes the right balance between campy fun and epic action. Squarely in the center of all this is Zhang’s Ram Man, a fierce and loyal Eternian warrior, and Vunipola’s Hussein, Adam’s only friend on Earth.

Getting to speak to them was an absolute honor, as technically, in many ways, both represent the two sides of what makes Adam who he is: the kid and empathetic human, as well as the mighty and mythic Eternian champion.

To get to the bottom of both of these characters and how both Zhang and Vunipola approached the material, we were able to chat with them about how they approached their characters and what they loved about them. Check out what they had to say here:
