A Los Angeles Theatre Review: ‘Defenders’

In the realm of Los Angeles intimate theatre, efficiency and constraint are often unfortunately emphasized as budget limitations become the all-too familiar factor hovering over anyone who dreams of doing anything grandiose. So when I heard about a World War II play written by Cailin Maureen Harrison that was going to have its world premiere with the Pandelia’s Canary Yellow Company, I was intrigued because my burning question was: How exactly do you stage a WWII story in a black box setting and do so compellingly??

Despite a months (née years)-long campaign to have Marvel and Netflix consider Asian American actors for the role of Danny Rand in their upcoming Iron Fist show, it was announced that Game of Thrones star(?) Finn Jones had been cast in the role.

Misty Knight Cast in Netflix’s Luke Cage

As we get closer and closer to the late-2015 premiere date of Jessica Jones, Netflix’s follow-up to the mega-successful Daredevil, the rest of Marvel’s Television Universe is starting to take shape. We all know that Luke Cage is the next series in the pipeline; in fact, Cage is part of the main cast of Jessica Jones, played by Mike Colter. Now, news has come out that the next major Marvel character to get the live action treatment will be none other than Misty Knight, who will be played by Southland’s Simone Missick.

Marvel and Netflix Team Up, Rule the Internet

Well that didn’t take long.

Iron Fist and Luke Cage

One day after DC Entertainment announced they’re developing a CW show about Hourman (yawn), this morning Marvel revealed their plan to create five original shows for Netflix — one each for Daredevil(!), Jessica Jones(!), Luke Cage(!), and Iron Fist(!) that will all build toward a Defenders miniseries. Then dropped the mic and walked off the stage.
