‘Yasuke’ is a Beautiful and Bloody Love Letter to the First Black Samurai

Yasuke. A real life folktale. Not so much in the sense that he never existed. It’s more like there isn’t much known about his mysterious life, aside from how challenging it must have been.

All that’s known about history’s first Black samurai is that he was likely born around 1540 in Africa, around the Mozambique area. At some point in his life he came in contact with Oda Nobunaga, a feudal lord of Japan, and became a member of his samurai guard.

Win Morisaki Takes on America and Disney with ‘Ready Player One’

Win Morisaki is not a household name, certainly not to American audiences, but he’s ready to be. As the lead singer of the J-Pop group, PrizmaX, Morisaki is no stranger to the spotlight. He’s done music, movies, and TV.  Now, the 27-year-old actor and singer will make his international debut in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One as Toshiro Yoshiaki, aka Daito, a gamer in the OASIS and part of the High Five. 

The Nerds of Color sat down with the actor to chat about being part of a Spielberg film, being part of Generation Z, and how it feels to represent his identity on the big screen.

A Mutant from Planet Cripton, An Origin

In 1974, a baby arrived in the suburbs of Indianapolis, Indiana from the planet Cripton. She looked like the offspring of two Chinese immigrants, Ma and Pa Wong, but something was different.

The Earth’s gravitational force made it difficult for this baby to raise her head. She couldn’t crawl and went straight from sitting to walking. Perplexed, Ma and Pa Wong took their baby to the doctor and found out: she is a mutant from Cripton!

This is her origin story.
