‘Bluey’ Has Arrived at Disneyland: What Fans Need to Know

The Disneyland Resort has officially welcomed Bluey to its theme park universe. The debut of Bluey’s Best Day Ever drew in massive crowds of fans who flocked to Walt Disney’s original theme park during the spring break opening weekend of the experience. As vacation season gets in full swing, expect lines from rope drop at park open, a constantly packed pit of kids on the immersive dance floor, and full houses for performances on peak days.

In collaboration with Ludo Studio, the Australian animation house behind Bluey, Disneyland has finally welcomed the globally beloved show that has dominated the TV charts as the #1 most-streamed title on Disney+ into the parks. It’s been a long time coming, as the little show that could has catapulted into a juggernaut with fans of all ages. Sure, it’s a family show, but it’s pure feel-good animation that I can attest fellow millennials have been obsessed with since its premiere in 2018, whether or not they have children. And if you have kids, you already know it’s a big deal.

I’ve spent the better part of the last five years dedicated to converting fans, including my own child, into the Bluey fandom because, as far as animation goes, it’s one of this generation’s best, if not the greatest, television shows ever made. It’s a testament to not only the timelessness of 2D animation but also the power of imaginative play in childhood that many of us experienced and that some of us hope to pass down. The day-to-day adventures of a Heeler family of dogs are funny, heartfelt, and a nostalgic throwback to those years of formative family time spent with loved ones growing up. I know more adults into Bluey than kids, but that’s sure to change as my kiddo makes more fellowBluey fan friends. And now she has a space to meet them at Disneyland with Bluey’s Best Day Ever.

Disneyland invited The Nerds of Color and me, one of its resident mamas of color, to experience Disney Parks’ take on bringing Bluey’s world to its fans in a big way. The Fantasyland Theater has been transformed into Bluey’s school, complete with immersive areas inspired by iconic moments from the show. During the media preview, we were able to explore it more freely than park guests could over the course of the following days because, as expected, Bluey is drawing in huge crowds of fans for a space that operates from 9:00 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. with five shows throughout the day during operating park hours (subject to change).

If I could compare it to anything, it’s on the level of kids’ Coachella this spring break at Disneyland. The show is music-forward with a live band performing the hits from Bluey, including the theme song (a given for every show), the Grannies’ theme, and so many more. Each show is a mixed medley of tunes and comedic sketches (such as storytime with Unicorse). You see the best references brought to life as Bluey and Bingo dance with a high-energy troupe to match the crowd’s excited aura after waiting out in the sun for hours to enjoy the show.

As of publication, the Disneyland Resort is filling in the available theater seating with crowds for every show and pulsing them out between sets to allow for as many park guests and families to get to see the shows. So don’t expect to be allowed to camp in the seats, Hall H style, in order to catch every version of the performances and live skits. Once the show is done, you’ll have to get back in line or come back another time if the queue is cut off for the day.

Showtimes are currently 9:30 a.m., 10:50 a.m., 12:10 p.m., 1:50 p.m., and 3:10 p.m. (subject to change).

Can you meet Bluey and Bingo?

Short answer: No.

So, while yes, there are now Bluey and Bingo park characters at Disneyland, they’re only featured as part of the show on stage with no announced meet-and-greets just yet. If you want to get a pic with them and your kids, you might need to get creative and try to get them in the background during the moments they dance or pose near you if you’re on the immersive dance floor.

It’s like a concert vibe; if you’re a music festival vet with a tiny human now, the same rules apply.

What characters from Bluey show up in Bluey’s Best Day Ever?

Besides Bluey and Bingo, the rest of the Heeler family and their friends appear in a limited capacity. Bandit and Chilli are animated in moments on the proscenium screens. For fans of Bluey and Bingo’s chaotically iconic cousin Muffin, there’s good and slightly disappointing news.

Disappointing first: Muffin does not appear in person as her cousins do. Good news: Muffin gets multiple show-stealing moments. We got to see Muffin grace the Disneyland stage via a comically large tablet for Faceytalk appearances. The first performance she appears in is the Grannies segment as grouchy granny Gladys, as her cousins don their Janet and Rita personas to show that they can indeed dance. Muffin’s second performance is a showstopper ballet moment that was my favorite part of the show, where the legendary Heeler cousin gets to live out her Ballerina dreams.

Other notable appearances include fantastic live performances from members of the troupe as Unicorse with perfectly timed ‘Aaaand whhhyyy shoould I care?’ bits during interactive storytime or trivia. There’s also a hilariously unhinged presentation of a real-life Chattermax toy set to Strauss’ “Also sprach Zarathustra” that made the kids around us lose their minds, akin to when a special guest shows up at Coachella before unleashing musical mayhem.

The show makes great use of Bluey composer Joff Bush’s electro-needle drops, such as Chattermax’s theme, Burger Dog, and Dance Mode, while having the rest of the hits played by the incredible live band. The chill moments are set to the more lo-fi vibe selections, including “I Know A Place (The Creek Song),” which, hearing it performed live, brought tears to my eyes. I grew up a Disneyland annual passholder, and so to share new moments like the ones I had with my kid, as a SoCal local, I know I’m deeply lucky to be able to continue this unique tradition through work and having a Magic Key (the new AP).

How do the Disney Parks snacks capture the foodie fun from Bluey?

Bluey is known for a lot of its cuisine comedy, from magic asparagus to edamame beans to slipping on beans to pavlova to omelettes and duck cakes — there was so much they could have pulled from. Perhaps I am too much of a NERD because I was a little underwhelmed since my kid was not into really any of the food. Don’t get me wrong, she is only about to be two, so her palate is still forming. I would say the offerings are off to a good start, but they feel more geared toward the Disney foodies than the kids who watch the show.

For example, The Pizza Girls’ episode inspired baked potato is pretty much just pizza topping slop on a potato. It’s satisfactorily filling but messy. I think they could have gone simpler with it because kids and grown-ups love pizza in bite-sizes. Disney could have made a Pizza Girls pizza egg roll cart! As a parent, I can attest that we much prefer a handheld snack versus a marinara snaccident waiting to happen.

Now, when it came to having my kid try the options, she didn’t know what to do with the magic asparagus since it felt melty, and she just wanted to play with it. The green white chocolate will get on your hands, so if your kiddos want to play, have them hold it by the wrapper on the end. Nevertheless, this was the best handheld snack option. As fans of the parfait cakes at Disney, my husband and I loved the Pavlova Parfait. It did not disappoint in theming and was so tasty. Pro-tip: it was great to wash down with the very needed mudslide-esque Mud Cake Cold Brew, which chocolate fans will love.

On a future trip, I plan on trying out the Stumpfest chocolate cake (available at the Plaza Inn) and will keep my fingers crossed for a mini duck cake appearance in the future. One last minor critique is that the kids’ food option is a small hot dog, which doesn’t hit the theme. Burger Dog sliders with pickles and cheese would have fit more with a side of edamame or fries. And also, Disneyland here is where you bring out the candy apples since there’s a huge plot point around one in one of the Bluey episodes. The watermelon ice block in the lime drink was a nice touch and the most refreshing and exciting of the family-friendly options!

Is the Bluey merch at Disneyland worth it?

IMG: Sabina Graves — NOC

On the preview day, there were Squishmallow Bluey and Bingo plushes you could find anywhere, so I didn’t buy one. It’s a slight bummer since some of the accessories and standard shirts are very similar to items you can find outside the theme park at a lower price point. The most exciting collectible we saw on the first day, besides the Bluey Disneyland sipper, are the boxed figures that feature Muffin as Granny Gladys, Bluey with her ball blaster, and Bingo holding her duck cake. We bought the Bingo, as that is the only figure that has a bit of a blind-box chase situation, where some boxes contain a mystery variant.

It definitely feels like Disney is eager to meet the Bluey fans’ Muffin-sized demands, so they’re releasing more commonplace retail items first. With that, I will say I am very excited about the Disneyland-exclusive merch, especially the theme park-specific Bingo and Bluey in mouse ears that will be available. You best believe I will be there as soon as they drop, fighting for my life against the Disney toy flippers. I hope our future holds dog garden gnome or Chattermax popcorn buckets.

And yes, of course, there will also be pins and a lanyard for you, Disney Pin Trader folks. I know that’s something that’s going to have major crossover fandom appeal among theme park goers. My eye, however, is also on the Disneyland-embroidered sweater that features Bluey and Bingo playing with a toy block castle. That one will have to wait for the inevitable day at the parks, where I will realize I forgot one of my many Disneyland sweaters at home, so I’ll simply have no choice but to add it to my collection then.
