For our very own holiday special, we review season 2 of The Mandalorian.
Production note, the audio is quite bad in this one because Jamie is working with a rental PC and couldn’t figure out how to get his multiple audio interfaces to work with the machine. Also, no intro or outro because those files are on a drive formatted for Mac OSX. So, you know, fuck everything.
It’s a quick holiday catch up because, well, no one’s doing shit right now. Also, Brandon has a really real job so he needs to sleep.
When the premise and the cast to Disney’s Christmas film Godmothered were first announced, which told the story of an inexperienced Fairy Godmother-in-training set out to help make a wish come true, one would think the casting got all mixed up.
The film stars Jillian Bell (Brittany Runs a Marathon, 22 Jump Street) as Eleanor, the hopeful, yet naïve, fairy Godmother-in-training, wanting to show the world that people still need fairy godmothers. After finding a mislaid letter from a 10-year-old girl in distress, Eleanor tracks the little girl down and discovers that the little girl, Mackenzie (Isla Fisher), is now a bitter 40-year-old single mom working a tiring job at a news station in Boston. Having lost her husband several years earlier, Mackenzie no longer believes in “Happily Ever After,” but Eleanor is determined to fix that frown upside down and find what truly makes her happy.

Last Christmas really tried.
It really did.
It had the makings of a cute, cheesy Christmas romantic comedy. The film stars Emilia Clarke as a 20-something Londoner who lost her moral way after a life-changing surgery and Henry Golding as the man who helps her find her way back. It had the perfect cheesy formula and all perfectly wrapped during Christmas. The film even had a great supporting cast with Michelle Yeoh and Emma Thompson.
What many were hoping for a story similar to Love Actually (which Thompson also starred in) ended up with an awkward coming-of-age Brexit Christmas story.

Finding something decent to watch on Christmas can often be a challenge. Reruns have no appeal, neither do cheesy holiday specials, and you probably couldn’t care less about sports.
Fear not. The following are five film suggestions that are appropriate not only for Christmas but basically any day ending in ‘y.’
The CW pulled out the big guns for The Flash’s second mid-season finale: Mark Hamill’s return as the Trickster, Captain Cold, and… Wally West? Yes. Wally Freaking Kid Flash West is in this episode, and he’s beautiful. I mean, it’s beautiful. Yeah. That’s what I meant. Anyways, happy holidays and speed onward to read onward!
When Love Actually premiered in cinemas over a decade ago, who knew it would be one of the most influential — and divisive — holiday movies ever made? You might think I’m being hyperbolic, but this movie is consistently one of the best selling DVDs and blu-rays every year1 and gains legions of new fans from multiple airings on cable and Netflix — though not for much longer. It’s also responsible for spawning an entire sub-genre of similar romantic comedies like Valentine’s Day and the equally awful New Year’s Eve. Love it or hate it, this flick evokes extreme feelings either way.
So why am I writing about Love Actually? It’s not like romantic comedy is a topic that’s covered on the NOC. Well, for one thing, most of the movie’s sprawling cast of British actors have gone on to become icons of the Comic-Con set. The stars of today’s biggest genre properties can trace their lineage back to this flick, and it’s amazing.

For those of you who aren’t aware, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Rankin/Bass Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer holiday special which airs annually on CBS. It’s a holiday special that I’ve always found unsettling.
I attended Catholic school between the third and the fifth grade and with the exception of two Asian students, I was the only POC in our entire class. Let’s just say at 8 years old I received a crash course in racism and we’re going to leave it at that.
Each year we would watch the animated classic of Rudolph. There was always something disturbing about the story. It wasn’t until last year when I came to the epiphany that the tale is a metaphor for minority plight.

Before I ring in Christmas 2013 with a traditional viewing of my favorite Holiday film, Batman Returns — this year with a special Fatman on Batman commentary track courtesy of Kevin Smith and Marc Bernardin, I wanted to take a minute and thank all of you who have been reading and enjoying The Nerds of Color these last few months. It has really been an honor and a privilege to make this site a reality, and it blows my mind everyday that so many of you have taken the time to engage in our nerdy conversations.
