Having just been nominated for a Best Animated Feature Oscar, Big Hero 6 will be available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD on February 24. Since that’s just a month away, most retailers already have the movie available for pre-order. Fred the Fanboy would be pleased to know that several different packages of the movie will be made available including The Collector’s Edition, the Target Exclusive, and the Wal-mart Exclusive.
The Collector’s Edition includes all three formats (Blu-ray™ + DVD + Digital HD) and has an MSRP of $39.99. Both Amazon Pre-order and Wal-Mart Pre-order have managed to cut this down to $18.90. I never understand how.
The Disney Store has listed their Collector’s Edition of the film at $24.95, but this includes four official lithographs that are immediately available (as long as supplies last). I’ve pre-ordered with The Disney Store before, and I found that it’s best to physically go to the store — rather than pre-order from DisneyStore.com, which promises the same offer — and pay for my pre-order in person so that I can take home the lithographs before they run out of them. One down side of doing this is having to go back to the store to pick up the reserved copy (which may be inconvenient for those who don’t have a Store close-by), but Disney has made it so that you can bring your voucher to any of its Store locations.
The lithographs (pictured above and on DisneyStore.com) are fairly large at 10” x 14” and each have a “special Disney seal” stamped in gold foil. They also come in a designed folder of the San Fransokyo skyline. The folder, in this nerd’s opinion, is the coolest art in the gift set.
The Target Exclusive is basically the Collector’s Edition in a steelbook sleeve, which is the advertised “Collectible Packaging.” It looks like the downside to this “collectible packaging” is the Target logo. The cover art features Armored Baymax and Hiro flying through San Fransokyo with their non-armored selves reflected in the water below them. Target has price listed this edition at 24.99, and it is also available for pre-order.
The Wal-Mart Exclusive Gift Set includes the Collector’s Edition plus a Bonus DVD called “The Science of Big Hero 6” which explores the hi-tech world of Hiro and Baymax. This package is available for pre-order for $26.96.
If you happen to be in Japan — where the movie just opened at the end of December — most theaters allow you to purchase this 36-page behind-the-scenes book. Sure, it’s all in Japanese, but the artwork, design, and layout of the book are gorgeous.
So now that you know about all of the options and freebies, there’s no reason to not be satisfied with your care if you’re planning on purchasing the movie.
