August 1 is Spider-Man Day, celebrating Marvel Comics’ best-known character in all his myriad incarnations. This year, August 1 also happens to be the first day of gymnastics individual event finals at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. If you are in Japan, where it is already tomorrow (relative to the United States): ハッピー スパイダーマン デー! Sources close to Deadline say that while deal hasn’t been finalized, it does come at the end of a fairly long and considerate search for the film’s director. Like most folk, I’m not too keen on reminders of my ever-increasing age. But this one, well, it’s not too bad of a milestone reminder.
Miles Morales, Marvel’s best Spider-Man, debuted nearly 10 years ago! You read that right, it’s been almost a decade since Miles inherited the Spidey title from Peter Parker and immediately one upped the kid from Queens.Continue reading “Marvel Celebrates Miles Morales’ 10th Anniversary with Variant Covers”
With great power, comes great responsibility. A timeless phrase with a powerful meaning. While it didn’t originate in comics, it was the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man that solidified the adage, transforming it into one of the most iconic comic book lines of all time.
Even if you haven’t ingested a single piece of Spidey content, the famous line tied heavily to Pete’s Uncle Ben has probably been ingrained in your memory by now. The line has been a major part of Peter Parker’s life for years, guiding the troubled hero through his hardest moments and reminding him why he dons the suit every day. But what happens when you don’t have great power anymore? What would Peter Parker do if he never became Spider-Man?Continue reading “A Talk With Marc Bernardin About His Version of Peter Parker in ‘The Amazing Shutterbug’”
It’s finally here! Reptil #1 finally hit comic book shelves last Tuesday, reintroducing fans to a longtime member of Marvel’s heroes gallery. Humberto Lopez, a.k.a Reptil, finally gets his own solo series, taking us deeper into the life of the teenage dino-shifting hero. But the emphasis isn’t on Beto’s life as a superhero. Amidst the disbanding of the Avengers Academy team and the world-changing effects of Kamala’s Law, writer Terry Blas takes on a personal journey for Beto — introducing us to several members of his family and delivering a comic proud to represent the Latinx community in a fresh, inspiring way.Continue reading “‘Reptil #1’ Review: Meet The Family”
Aaron Taylor-Johnson brought one of Marvel’s fastest superheroes to life in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. We all know how that ended, but though his time with the character was short-lived, Johnson’s take amassed a fanbase that arguably rivals his Kick Ass co-star Evan Peters’ version from the X-Men films.
Now, ATJ is returning to the Marvel universe, but instead of speeding alongside the world’s finest, he’ll be taking his sweet time hunting them down; starting with Spider-Man.Continue reading “Didn’t See That Coming: Aaron Taylor-Johnson Returns to Marvel with Sony’s ‘Kraven The Hunter’”
Let’s admit it, we all went through weird, unexplainable phases as children. Some of us really loved cartoons, some of us collected Pokemon cards, and if you were like me, you were really into dinosaurs. Perhaps even a bit too much into them.Continue reading “A Talk with ‘Reptil’ Writer Terry Blas about Marvel’s Shelf-Slashing New Series”
Yesterday, the first trailer for Marvel Studios Eternals dropped online and immediately broke the internet, trending at #1 on YouTube for a full day straight, and garnering 10M views in 17 hours alone! And let’s be honest, at this point it’s incredibly expected for several factors: the unwavering popularity of the MCU; the fact that the film represents Chloe Zhao’s follow up to the Oscar-winning Nomadland; and alluring and heightened curiosity around who these characters are and what their role is within the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. Wait a sec! Back up! Who are these characters?Continue reading “An Extra Close Examination and Explanation of the ‘Eternals’ Trailer”

Dominic, Britney, and Keith react to the official Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins trailer and why Henry Golding’s portrayal of the character is so meaningful. They also watched a short behind-the-scenes feature and differentiate between the G.I. Joe comics and cartoons, and Keith explains why he no longer cares if Iron Fist is Asian American anymore.
Imagine, waking up to find you have the ability to transform into any dinosaur you want. You could run as fast as a raptor, be as large as a T-Rex, or soar like a Pterodactyl (I know it’s not a dinosaur just roll with it). What sounds like the fever-induced dream of a child between the ages of 4-14 is every day life for Humberto Lopez, resident reptilian hero and Marvel’s next big thing.Continue reading “A Hero on a Massive Scale: Reptil Slashes Through Marvel Comics in Late May”
While Marvel Comics has never allowed Sam Wilson to remain Captain America, it is good to see they have decided to allow him to hold the title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In the comics, they engineered an excuse for him to become Captain America and when they were done with the story arc, Steve Rogers reclaimed his title and his shield.Continue reading “I Am Captain America: Get Used to It”
Well, this is kind of embarrassing. Monday, April 19, was Simu Liu’s birthday, and all I got him was an edible arrangement. In any other instance, that would be a perfectly safe and standard gift, in my opinion. But of course, here comes Marvel in an epic move of one-upmanship with the release of the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings teaser trailer! Though in all fairness, their gift is way more universal than mine.Continue reading “The Who, What, and Why of Marvel’s Epic New Movie, ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’”

Oh man. In a perfect world we would have seen this movie almost a year ago. But for obvious reasons we just couldn’t. But make no mistake, our anticipation and desires have only grown stronger.

By now, if you’re anything like us, you’ve already seen the first three episodes of WandaVision. If not — how dare you call yourself an MCU fan (just kidding, we love you!). Having said that, it’s no spoiler to say the show presents an intriguing slow burn mystery that keeps us guessing from the first frame to the very last frame of the third episode. And boy do we love the hell out of it! But, do we have any idea what’s going on, and why, or how it all leads into Marvel Studios’ first horror film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? Not a clue. And I’m sure you all are saying the same things. So being that we’re all MCU fans here at The Nerds of Color, we want to commiserate with you, our faithful fandom family, and see if we can put together our detective hats and paranoid “Charlie Day” conspiracy theory boards to present a few potential theories about where the series is going, and what the underlying story is behind WandaVision. If we’re wrong, please don’t hate us, but if we’re right, Marvel Studios owes us $2 billion dollars for cracking the case (Update: We’ve reached out to them and they said no to this so… just bragging rights)!
**Please note, we absolutely cannot express strongly enough that we will dive into spoiler territory for the first three episodes. So if you have not seen them yet, we very much encourage you to please watch before you read the rest of this article.**Continue reading “UPDATED NOC Theories: The “Whos,” “Whats,” and “Whys” of ‘WandaVision’”

There could not be a better time to grab the companion novel to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales than now. The game dropped on PS4 and PS5 November 12 to rave reviews, as the pop cultural significance of Miles Morales seems to be losing zero steam, and rightly so.
Author Brittney Morris (Slay, The Cost of Knowing and Together, Apart) packs a ton into the prequel novel — from Miles’ dealings with police outside of his uniform, to Peter having to grapple with being a mentor to a Spider-Man whose reality greatly differs from his own. Wings of Fury delivers a story both heartfelt and absolutely action-packed that leads directly into the start of the game on consoles.Continue reading “Brittney Morris’ ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – Wings of Fury’ Delivers”
