D23 is in full swing. With the studio capping off day one with their signature showstopping Entertainment Showcase, Day 2 turned their attention to smaller but still fun-filled events. One of them being the Marvel Animation Sneak Peek.
The panel focused on the future of Marvel Animation and what to expect from titles like What If…?, X-Men ’97, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and more.

It all kicked off with X-Men ’97 season two, with EP Brad Winderbaum sharing the few details he could about what to expect from the highly anticipated new season. “We’re learning how to do new things and use new technologies. And every creator you work with brings a point behind the table that influences you and changes you. So there are always lessons learned,” Winderbaum said. “Season two is no different. we were able to judge what people responded to, what they didn’t respond to.”
Winderbaum then introduced Lenore Zann (Rogue) and Cal Dodd (Wolverine) to the stage. There, Zann reminisced on cons of the past and how the original voice cast would gather together for drinks and hoped for the day that someone would buy the rights to X-Men: The Animated Series and give it a reboot.
Zann said one of her favorite episodes is “The Cure,” when it sees Rogue at a crossroads in life on whether or not she should keep her powers. “She decided she wants to get rid of her superpowers, because they’re just too painful for her, and they make her not be able to be intimate with anyone or be close to anyone,” Zann said of Rogue’s internal conflict. “So she thinks she wants to get rid of them, so she’s gonna be normal, quote, unquote, but she realizes that it’s actually those things about her that make her unique and who she is, and she has to embrace all those parts of herself. And at the very end of the episode, anyone who has seen that show might remember when she says, I reckon I am my powers and the good they can do, and I reckon I can live with that. And then she says some she says, There is no cure for who you are, and I want to endorse it.”
As for Dodd, he hopes to see more of the Wolverine and Bishop dynamic. The old man and rookie banter between the two makes for quite a fun back-and-forth.
Zann also offered some clues as to what to expect to see from Rogue who is on her own journal after the painful loss of Gambit. “Rogue is on the hero’s journey. Anyone who knows what the hero’s journey knows we go through a lot of trials and tribulations to try and get to, you know, the golden apple, or whatever it is that you’re really desiring,” she said. “So she’s on a mission, and she’s not going to give up until she gets what she wants.”
Of course, it wouldn’t be much of a panel without them showing a brief X-Men ’97 sizzle reel. In it, we see that the X-Men have new uniforms inspired by Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly’s black with a yellow X across the body design. Villains that appear are Sabertooth, Lady Deathstrike, and Danger (the danger room come to life). On a final note, Wolverine says hes back while unsheathing his Adamantium coated claws. There’s no release date as of yet.

What If…? director Bryan Andrews took to the stage to dish out some of the juicy details the third and final season. During the panel, Andrews spoke about how he took creative big swings. “The wilder What If…? got, and the crazier it seems, the more the audience responds,” Andrews said. And judging by the sizzle reel, things will get crazy. There’s a Wild West multiverse where heroes are armed with six-shooters and doning cowboy hats. Another universe sees the Avengers assume the role of Super Sentai heroes who pliot mini mechas that can combine into one super giant mecha. Red Guardian, Photon, and Sam Wilson’s Captain America. And like all of the Super Sentai mechs, they have their own distinctive looks and parts to play. They’ll have to work together to defeat a hoard of Mega Hulks who are terrorizing a city in the same style that you would see a giant Mech confront a giant Monster of the Week. As such, the weapon designs are similiar. They even have the same flashy calls to summon their weapon. There’s no release date as of yet.
Next is Eyes of Wakanda, a new event series where the audience dives into the history of Wakanda and the work of generations of warriors they have done to safeguard against the outside forces who threaten the nation’s safety. Though most of the Marvel Animated shows have been more linear in is storytelling, Eyes of Wakanda visits different time periods while exploring how outsider dynamics have an effect on how “The action is insane and the storytelling is fantastic. It’s both about the history of Wakanda but also expands into the greater MCU at different time periods.”
Executive producers Todd Harris and Ryan Coogler stepped on to the stage to share more details about the show. There are intersection points through history, and there are also intersection points with some unbeknownst characters in the Marvel Universe that also are from secret cities whose name is in the title, and they have glowing fists. Could Harris be hinting at an Iron Fist visiting the nation of Wakanda,
Those in attendance got to see a brief clip of Eyes of Wakanda. In it, we see one of the MCU’s newest characters, known as Noni. Harris says Noni is a disruptor. She sneaks aboard a ship but is soon discovered by its captain. As she fights the ships crew she asks them why they follow a false god and they would be dying for an imposter. Though she is capable of handling large numbers, certain crew members with a very specific set of skills prove to be formidable.
Harris says that show will revolve around Wakanda’s efforts to protect their nation from outsiders and the price that has to be paid to keep that secrecy intact. There’s no release date as of yet.

Moving onto the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man portion of the panel, series creator Jeff Trammell took to the stage to talk about the new coming-of-age-series about Peter Parker trying to figure life out. The show puts a spin on the characters that we all now and love. For Trammell, he wanted to “give you a Spider-Man that’s the one you know, but maybe not the one you expect.”
Based on the new origins story along with the vintage ‘60s style look, Trammell delivers. And the new voice of Spider-Man and Peter Parker Hudson Thames was joined by Academy Award-nominee and new voice of Norman Osborn, Coleman Domingo.
The footage was brief but still left enough of an impact. In it, we see Aunt May dropping Peter off for his first day of school. He’s a bit nervous as attending a prestigous school comes with a lot of pressure. To make matters worse, a portal opens with a Venom like creature dropping out of it. Panic ensues and then the camera zooms in on a tiny spider that is dangling from the portal.
As Peter tries to show his bravery by saving a friend, Doctor Strange shows up to save the day, and close the portal. However, the spider that was dangling falls onto Peter. And when he gets bit Peter faints.
The clip then takes us to a months later tag, where Peter as assumed the role of Spider-Man. Though, he isn’t a very good superhero considering the high-tech speedy criminals he’s chasing keeps putting him on the floor. One lands a hit so devestating that Peter starts to hear voices and asks if that’s god. But it isn’t, it’s actually Norman Osborn who talks to Peter via radio communication. Judging by the exchange, it doesn’t sound like Norman knows Peter is Spider-Man. Together, they devise a strategy to take down these lowly criminals by taking advantage of their uncontrollable speed and using a string of web to trip them.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man doesn’t have a release date of yet but it is expected to begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ in 2024.
Lastly, Marvel Zombies is being described as a hardcore TV-MA four-episode event that acts as a sequel to season 1’s “What If… Zombies?!” The clip they showed revealed Shang-Chi and Katy fighitng off a hoard of zombies, while Wenwu and the Deathdealer hover over them aboard a helicopter. As the fight continues, Wenwu drops in to give an assist. However, Shang-Chi ends up getting bit by one of the zombies. As the infection quickly spreads, Wenwu sends the five rings on one of his arms to Shang-Chi. the infection stops but Wenwu ends up getting bit as well.
Five years later, the world has become a desert wasteland where humans and Skrulls fight for survival. Though the sequence is filled with intense action sequences, it is then alleviated by some comedy when Shang-Chi and Katy sing along to Journey’s “Lights.”
Marvel Zombies doesn’t have a release date of yet but it is expected to begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ in 2024.
