Love Hurts starring Ke Huy Quan is hitting theaters this Friday. In the film, Quan’s Marvin Gable finds the ultimate villain in Daniel Wu’s Alvin “Knuckles” Gable, Marvin’s brother. After all, you can’t have an epic series of stunts and fights from the team behind John Wick, without two incredible forces of action leading the charge. Recently we were given the tremendous opportunity to chat with Wu about his role in the movie, as well as Asian representation in cinema.
Despite what the current bigotry-ridden climate may have you believe, diversity, equality, and inclusion are still incredibly important, whether folks want to hear it or not. I believe that to be significantly true for America, and definitely in Hollywood. We’ve seen diversity challenges plague even the most prominent of Asian stars in the industry, with Quan himself fighting through an uphill battle of typecasting and limited roles for Asian actors to get to where he is today: an Oscar-winning action star! Which is why a movie starring Quan and Wu, and directed by an Asian filmmaker like Jonathan Eusebio is something we truly need these days.
Wu himself has been a force to be reckoned with in the industry, with starring roles in series like Into the Badlands, as well as roles in Tomb Raider, Warcraft, and American Born Chinese (where he first met Quan). Now seeing him as a villain in Quan’s new film allows him to embrace the fun and chaos of a strong and badass character, dealing punishment to all those who get in his way! We were able to discuss the new film with Wu, and chat about ways we can ensure diversity in the industry persists.
