Disney has released a new trailer for Pixar’s Elio, an intergalactic tale about a young outcast who dreams of finding a friend up in the stars. Directed by Madeline Sharafian (Burrow Sparkshort), Domee Shi (Bao short, Turning Red), and Adrian Molina (co-screenwriter/co-director of Coco), the upcoming film marks the studio’s return to space-age adventures, a first since Wall-E.
In the film, Elio (Yonas Kibreab) is an 11-year-old kid whose biggest wish is to get abducted by aliens. His Aunt Olga (voiced by recent Academy Award® winner Zoe Saldaña) worries that her nephew’s head is in the sky too much and encourages him to make friends on earth.
After many attempts, Elio’s wish finally comes true when he gets abducted by an alien ship. And his Aunt Olga’s wish comes true when Elio befriends Glordon (voiced by Remy Edgerly), Elio’s unexpected first friend who happens to be an alien. Mistaken for being an ambassador to earth, Elio must navigate intergalactic diplomacy while encountering a host of out-of-this world creatures who just might help him figure out exactly where he belongs.
Set against Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now,” the trailer showcases the film’s humor in Elio’s misadventures while also reminding us about the stakes at hand. Like most Pixar films, there’s going to be that fine balance between silliness and drama. So, I wouldn’t be surprised to see how much more emotional it can get.
Elio has experienced some production changes throughout its three-year production, including Shi and Sharafian replacing Molina, who still receives a directing credit. Additionally, there some minor story revisions to help audiences connect with the title character. Nothing new for a production from Pixar, considering it takes four to seven years to make an animated feature.
The film also features the voices of Jameela Jamil as Questa and Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, an alien ambassador who also happens to be Glordon’s father.
Elio opens in theaters on June 20, 2025.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for Elio:

So, when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide, Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking.
