Official Title and Release Date for ‘Superman’ Sequel Revealed

It’s been a hell of a summer for The Man of Steel! After proving skeptics wrong with healthy box office results and critical acclaim, James Gunn’s Superman made us all believe a man could fly once again. Given its success, fans have been clamoring to know more about what’s next for Gunn’s DCU and Kal-El. Thankfully, Gunn and the cast have officially dropped news of the title and release date for the highly anticipated next chapter!

Superman made waves for a number of reasons. In addition to bringing the humanity and kindness back to the character, it told the story of an arrogant billionaire threatened by the presence of an immigrant, at a time when anti-immigration sentiment is at an all time high. Gunn had to defend himself against anti-woke critics who refused to acknowledge the fact that Superman is literally the story of an immigrant who came to Earth, and the product of two Jewish Americans who were the sons of immigrants themselves. That said, for all the attempts at controversy many tried to raise, the movie soared at the domestic box office, and kicked off the new DCU with success.

Now today, Gunn has revealed what the next chapter of that story will be called, and when it will be coming out. Behold — Superman: Man of Tomorrow, hitting theaters July 9, 2027!

In addition to Gunn’s reveal featuring some terrific artwork from Jim Lee, members of the cast, including Nicholas Hoult and, of course, David Corenswet, revealed their own announcements as well, featuring different artwork from Mitch Gerards and Jorge Jimenez, respectively. The motif, of course, is that this will be the continuing battle between an immigrant/alien who truly represents humanity, and the human billionaire trying to elevate himself above humanity. We can see that with the reveal of Lex’s Kryptonite power suit, which is iconic from the comics and several iterations of the Superman mythology.

We don’t know where the story might go. It’s definitely an opportunity for Gunn to also explore other characters that have never been adapted to the big screen before, such as Parasite (who was the villain of the DC Animated Movie, Superman: Man of Tomorrow), Brainiac, Bizzarro (who many are speculating could be the result of Ultraman returning from the black hole in the first film), or many others. However, Gunn has previously stated that this may not necessarily be a traditional sequel. On Threads, he’s stated that he’s working on the next chapter of “the Superman Saga” but has been playing coy about the nature of Man of Tomorrow as a traditional sequel.

What does tomorrow hold for Superman? I guess we’re just going to have to find out when Superman: Man of Tomorrow hits theaters July 9 2027!
