Fabulous Secret Powers Were Revealed in the ‘Masters of the Universe’ Teaser Trailer

To paraphrase Prince Adam’s opening monologue to the cartoon, we poured through every frame of Amazon MGM Studios’ Masters of the Universe trailer to reveal all of its fabulous secrets. In case you haven’t seen it yet, take another look:

Prior to the trailer, Travis Knight’s approach to the source material was cloaked in mystery. Aside from leaked set photos, the only official image released was limited to a close-up of the Power Sword.

We also knew there would be scenes set on Earth (in a nod to the 1987 movie, perhaps?) But now we know just how much the production was inspired by the Mattel action figures and Filmation animated series.

From the jump, the trailer embraces the colorful source material with a beautiful shot of Zoar soaring above the skies of Eternia before closing in on a glorious shot of Castle Grayskull, itself. And as cool as the design for the 1987 live action Grayskull was, I was not prepared for such a faithful interpretation in my lifetime.

Speaking of faithful interpretations, Travis Knight and company went above and beyond to surround Nicholas Galitzine with designs straight out of Mark Taylor’s imagination. Even the easter eggs were made for the most diehard MOTU fans. Take for instance the scene in which (Prince) Adam locates the Sword of Power being gripped by a life-sized barbarian statue that bears a striking resemblance to Vikor. For those who don’t know, Vikor was one of the original prototype designs for what would eventually become He-Man.

Another deep cut that made the trailer is the airship that brings the Evil Warriors onto the scene. I don’t think it’s confirmed, but I’m more than convinced this is a shot of the Collector, Skeletor’s iconic personal transport from the cartoon (that finally got a toy version from Mattel a couple years back)

Speaking of ol’ Skelly, his reveal in the trailer is probably my favorite shot in the whole thing:

I have to admit the bad guys overshadowed everything else in the trailer (maybe because we’d already seen Camila Mendes as Teela in set leaks, not to mention the teaser of Idris Elba as Duncan, Kristin Wiig as Roboto, and Cringer that already came out yesterday).

But this was the first time we’d seen any of the Evil Warriors. Below is a gallery that includes our first looks at Spikor, Beast-Man, Trap Jaw, and Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn.

We also get an ominous looking shot of Snake Mountain (pretty sure we never saw this in the ’87 movie).

Of course, we would be remiss to not mention getting to finally see Galitzine fully formed as He-Man. With no disrespect to Dolph Lundgren, this is the live-action He-Man we’ve waited four decades for. While I’m not familiar with Galitzine’s body of work, and was initially confused by his casting, this shot looks like the action figure come to life.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe will defend Castle Grayskull from the evil forces of Skeletor in theaters everywhere on June 5.
