NOC Review: ‘The Nun II’ is a Merciful Improvement Over its Predecessor

It’s been 10 years since The Conjuring debuted to huge box office business and terrific reviews. And in that time, a universe has been established of the freakiest demonic presences in modern day cinema. The most terrifying of which was Valak, aka The Nun!

NOC Review: ‘Ahsoka’ is a Solid and Epic Slow Burn

She is no Jedi! But she is incredible! I’m referring, of course, to legendary Skywalker Padawan, Ahsoka Tano! When last we saw her, in both The Mandalorian Season 2 and The Book of Boba Fett Season 1, Ahoska was on the hunt for Grand Admiral Thrawn, while also providing some necessary words of wisdom to both Din Djarin and Luke Skywalker. But now it’s time for her to shine in her own epic series! This will be a review of the first two episodes of Ahsoka!

NOC Review: ‘Blue Beetle’ is Genuinely One of DC’s Finest Films

Yeah. You read that right. And look, I know the bar seems pretty low. When your past three releases include Black Adam, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and The Flash — one of which was sold as allegedly “one of the best superhero movies of all time,” when it actually was a complete mess of obnoxiousness and bad VFX — it may not seem like high praise. But genuinely and truly, Blue Beetle is actually a really terrific film.

‘Blue Beetle’ Director Angel Manuel Soto Unleashes the First Major Latino Superhero

The Blue Beetle is landing on August 18! And while many out there may be unfamiliar with the character, let me just say, Jaime Reyes is awesome! This is a movie worth celebrating, not just because it represents the first major Latino superhero movie to hit theaters, but because it’s actually really very good, and one of the best cinematic surprises of the year! And we at The Nerds of Color were lucky enough to sit down with the clever maestro behind the film, director Angel Manuel Soto!

NOC Review: ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ Sinks More Than It Scares

In my review of The Boogeyman, I talked about how we’ve been lucky to have such good horror entries to come out in recent years. Even this summer alone, we were treated to A24’s sleeper hit, Talk To Me, and even fans of Insidious came out to support The Red Door. And The Last Voyage of the Demeter seemed like a worthy candidate to follow in those footsteps with a slam dunk for August horror. But alas, this faux-Dracula tale still winds up second (as far as Dracula films this year go) behind Universal’s previous Dracula-inspired story this year, Renfield. And that’s actually pretty sad.

Capturing the ‘Ninja Turtles’ Look with ‘Mutant Mayhem’ Cinematographer Kent Seki

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is officially in theaters! And if you haven’t seen this one yet, we cannot recommend it enough. It’s spectacular! And part of the reason this one is special is because of how beautiful and charming the movie looks, from it’s wonderful animation style to the filmmakers’ abilities to put some challenging but gorgeous action sequences on screen. And none of that would be possible without the film’s talented cinematographer, Kent Seki!

Taking a Deep Sea Stroll with ‘Meg 2’ Director Ben Wheatley

Meg 2: The Trench is taking a bite out of theaters this week! And to answer the most frequently asked question about the movie. Yes they did make a sequel to The Meg. And it was because, as many might have forgotten, the first made half a billion dollars at the worldwide box office! This time around, the directorial duties are being passed down to Free Fire director, Ben Wheatley, who we were given the incredible opportunity to speak with!

NOC Review: ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ Goes Full Turtle Power

“Go ninja, go ninja, go!” Those were the immortal words uttered in the finale of arguably the last good movie based on Laird and Eastman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That may be a controversial statement for fans for the Bay-produced 2014 and 2016 films, the 2007 cheaply animated movie TMNT, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. But as a fan myself, whether for nostalgic or legitimate reasons, nothing ever really topped the first two live action films from 1990 and 1991. Until now.

NOC Review: ‘Haunted Mansion’ is Better than the First but Still Flawed

Justin Simien’s Haunted Mansion is hitting theaters this weekend. This is the second attempted to adapt Disney’s beloved attraction The Haunted Mansion into a stellar blockbuster film. The first was the 2003 adaptation that starred Eddie Murphy, which, if I’m being honest, wasn’t great. And thankfully Simien does a little better with the material, but overall, I’m still waiting for a definitive adaptation to materialize.
