NOC Review: It’s Easy to ‘Speak No Evil’ With a Movie So Forgettable

This is not Blumhouse’s year. They’re 0 for 4 so far, with Night Swim, Imaginary, AfrAId, and now Speak No Evil. While the latest film from Blumhouse is easily the most watchable of their 2024 offerings, is “bland and forgettable” really the bar they want to set here? Maybe next year will be better.

NOC Review: Lackluster ‘Imaginary’ is More Fantasy Than Horror

This time last year, Blumhouse was on a roll. M3GAN was making a killing at the box office. And the year prior they released the final film of David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy, and the critical and commercial hit, The Black Phone, paving the way for the juggernauts of Insidious: The Red Door and Five Nights at Freddy’s. Unfortunately, following the disappointing Night Swim, the house that Jason Blum built has seen a rough 2024. And sadly the streak continues with the new lackluster film, Imaginary.

New Trailer for ‘Night Swim’ Emerges from the Deep End

These days, so many critics of the current film landscape like to point out the lack of originality in storytelling. But the horror genre is and always has been a breeding ground for that originality to flourish. Many directors are able to tell their stories in short film form, and go on to adapt them for feature-length films. David F. Sandberg did this with Lights Out. And now Bryce McGuire is doing it with his and Rod Blackhurst’s short film, Night Swim.
