While covering NYCC 2024, I caught up with the founder and CEO of Blumhouse, Jason Blum. We discussed the company’s many exciting projects that are coming up this year, including The Woman in the Yard on March 28, Drop dropping on April 11, M3GAN 2.0 premiering June 27, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 out December 5.

Jason Blum: Well, I think the originals are the most surprising, right? So, The Woman in the Yard or Drop, those are our two originals. So, I think Drop probably will surprise fans the most. It’s a story we haven’t seen before. It’s original and it’s terrific, so maybe that’ll be the most surprising.
So, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, I actually just spoke with Matthew Lillard… he’s the best, isn’t he?
He’s great, he’s terrific.
What has it been like to see the response to that project? I mean, it became a favorite immediately, highest grossing in Blumhouse history, and has a sequel coming out a year later, all of that amazing stuff. What are you most excited for fans to see with the second one?
It’s been amazing. The Five Nights at Freddy’s journey, it took a long time to get the first movie right and we finally got the script right. Scott has just been an extraordinary partner, for me, through making these movies. Emma, Matthew, and the cast is back but I’m working now with a Scott who’s been through the process, so he’s really got a magic superpower and he stays very, very close to these movies. He’s kind of the guiding light for these movies and the reason that fans respond to the movies the way that they do is because Scott’s involved in every aspect of them and I’m very grateful to him for that.

Now, onto Drop. What stood out to you about that story?
Well, it was a great idea. It was Platinum Dunes, [which] is run by Michael Bay and Brad Fuller, and his son, Cameron Fuller, came up with this idea, and he’s a producer on the movie. I thought the idea was terrific. I got it actually after they’d given the script to Chris Landon and we’ve worked with Chris for 15 years. We started working with him on the Paranormal Activity movies, and he is a super, super talent. Drop is a perfect tone for him, which is scary with a little bit of — some kind of funny, ironic things. So the combination of the script, the idea, and Chris got me really excited about the movie.
Of course, I have to ask you about M3GAN 2.0. I mean, that was another movie [where the feedback was incredible], were you ready for that? Did you have any idea?
I had no idea. I was very happy about it, but I had no idea how M3GAN was going to impact the culture. People are really craving for more of M3GAN and we’re going to deliver for them.
Last question, since we’re at New York Comic Con, what was it like to be in that panel room and see all of the people who are so passionate about these projects? I was in the audience and it’s surreal, but I imagine it’s even crazier to be on the stage seeing it.
It’s very surreal. It’s our biggest year and I’ve been working on 2025 for two years, but it’s the first time that we’ve spoken about it. Everyone knew about the individual movies, but it was the first time we’ve spoken about collectively what Atomic Monster and Blumhouse mean together as a company when they’ve been together for 18 months and what the companies can do together. It was kind of very emotional. It was very meaningful. Also, these are all people like, very old friends — Allison I’ve known for 10 years, and Chris, Mike Flanagan, Scott Derrickson, and Kevin Bacon, they’re people we’ve worked with [for] years and years and years. So it’s made me feel old but happy.
