‘Strange World’ Cast and Crew on Reimagining a Classic Action-Adventure Story For Today

Those classic action adventure stories like Journey to the Center of the Earth and King Kong took audiences to unexplored worlds unknown where danger is around every corner. But they were all a product of their times where there was a lack of diversity within its characters. Fortunately, Walt Disney Animation Studios changes that with Strange World.

Directed by Don Hall and co-directed by Qui Nguyen, the 61st animated feature film in the Disney Animation Studios library features the voices of Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, and Lucy Liu, and follows three generations of Clades, a legendary family of explorers who must set aside their differences as they embark on a journey to a mysterious planet named Avalonia, inhabited by surreal lifeforms.

The Nerds of Color had the chance to talk to stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Gabrielle Union, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, directors Don Hall and Qui Nguyen, and producer Roy Conli about subverting the genre with contemporary themes, diverse characters, engaging stories, and what fans should expect to see in Strange World.

Strange World opens in theaters on November 23, 2022.
