‘Jojo Rabbit’ Sends a Timely Message via Satire, Fascism, and War
The 39th Hawaii International Film Festival is currently underway in Honolulu, and the 11-day event began with a stellar opening night screening last Thursday of Taika Waititi’s latest film, Jojo Rabbit. Set in Nazi Europe, the dark comedy loosely based on the Christine Leunens novel, Caging Skies, follows a 10-year-old Hitler Youth (Roman Griffin Davis) who finds out his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their home. Through getting to know her, he comes to question his own beliefs, even in the midst of his imaginary friend, an idiotic version of Adolf Hitler played by Waititi himself, trying to tell him otherwise.

Photos from 20th Century Fox’s “COSMIX” X-Men Event!
Last week Fox, IW Group, and The Nerd Reactor teamed up to put on a pretty x-citing event to commemorate 19 years of the X-Men film legacy at Downtown Los Angeles’ Wisdome LA! The event featured three EDM musical acts, including up-and-coming rising star Wenzday, as well as some amazing fire dancers and, of course, the immersive art pieces that you could only see at the Wisdome. NOC Review: Dull ‘Phoenix’ Barely Rises Above Subpar
Sometimes when the public gets hold of bad buzz regarding a studio tentpole, they end up pleasantly surprised by the result of the film. Wonder Woman was at one point considered to be “a mess” thereby worrying audiences before release. Aladdin was getting blasted online, and Disney was getting ready to take another Solo-sized bath. However, Wonder Woman went on to become the DCEU’s best reviewed film and a huge box office hit, and Aladdin went on to positive audience reviews, and grossed a healthy $100M in four days, two weekends ago. Nope, negative buzz isn’t always reflective of the final product itself… Unless you’re Dark Phoenix. Then it’s entirely true.

NOC Review: ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ is Less Than the Sum of Its Parts
I’ll get this out of the way right now — Alita: Battle Angel is not necessarily bad, per se. However, it is something of a disappointment and/or wasted opportunity given that the combined talents of Robert Rodriguez (The El Mariachi Trilogy, Sin City, From Dusk Til Dawn) and James Cameron (Terminator, Titanic, Avatar) ought to yield something phenomenal. I’m a huge fan of both, believing Rodriguez to be a master in the domain of stylish genre action, and Cameron to be a master of groundbreaking science-fiction. Thus, when the most I can say about it is that it’s “not bad” it should give you a good idea of how let down I was by a movie that had so much potential.

A Future Realized On-Screen: An Interview with ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ Creator Yukito Kishiro
Film adaptations are often hard to crack, whether they are of the comic book, TV show, novel, or other type of variety. The stories being adapted may be timeless, and might lay the groundwork for a film adaptation, but hardcore fanbases are typically the hardest to please, accepting only the best out of their film adaptations to truly do justice to their passion for the material (spend any time at all on the internet if you don’t believe me). Oftentimes, we become fortunate enough to see certain types of adaptations finally begin to take a repeatable successful stride in this industry (as we’re more or less now seeing with comic book-based offerings from DC and Marvel). Then sometimes other types of adaptations, such as film adaptations of manga or anime, can take a bit more time to bake before the success stories can roll in (as we’ve seen with critical and box office disappointments, such as Dragonball Evolution, Netflix’s Death Note, or Ghost in the Shell).

Lewis Tan on Shatterstar, Representation, and How He Really Feels about Thirst Tweets
This year seems to be the Year of the Tan, aka Lewis Tan.

Coming off the heels of wrapping the second season of Atlanta on FX and a successful stint hosting SNL — as well as being the musical guest — he captivated the internet with the release of the music video “This is America.” Now, he’s currently portraying a young Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story before going on to voice Simba in the live action Lion King adaptation for Disney. It may be safe to say that 2018 is shaping up to be the year of Donald Glover.

The much-anticipated Deadpool sequel is sure to be full of what fans love: more action, more mutants, more pop culture references. EXCLUSIVE: Shioli Kutsuna Reveals Her Secret ‘Deadpool 2’ Role
Deadpool 2 premieres this week and it has already been praised for its rated-R comedy and off-the-wall antics from actor and executive producer Ryan Reynolds. Another thing the film is getting praise for is the appearance of a queer couple in Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and her girlfriend, Yukio, played by Japanese-Australian actress, Shioli Kutsuna.
The 25-year-old actress has starred in many Japanese films and television shows and made her first international debut in last year’s The Outsider. Now, Kutsuna is playing her most electrifying role yet — X-Men recuit, Yukio.

‘Deadpool 2’ Review: Sequel is More of the Same
Sequels are extremely hard, especially when you have a completely different person in the director’s chair and the first film was a massive hit. The first Deadpool relied on Ryan Reynold’s charm, crude jokes, and kickass major fight-to-the-death scenes that earned the film’s R-rating. All of that paid off. Deadpool became the second highest grossing R-rated movie in U.S. history after Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. And, if you’re wondering, yes, the sequel does mention this achievement.
