‘Turning Red’ Finds Heart and Humor in the Messiness of Growing Up

Coming-of-age films are defined by what it means for their young characters to grow up. And, like the experience itself, no one story about growing up is the same as the next. It takes a special kind of film to capture the growing pains of a young person as they transition into adulthood. Turning Red, Pixar’s heartfelt and hilarious film, examines that journey through the lens of a 13-year-old Chinese Canadian girl who finds out that growing up may be a smelly beast — literally.

‘Turning Red’ Cast Gets Real about Friendships, Concerts, and Growing Pains

Unlike some of the one-dimensional female friendship and coming of age films of the past, Disney•Pixar’s Turning Red takes an honest look at the connections we have with our friends. What’s more, the film does it through the lens of a Chinese Canadian 13-year-old.

‘Turning Red’ Reimagines the Coming-of-Age Story Through Cultural Specificity

Pixar’s Turning Red is a film unlike any other. Directed by Domee Shi, the film centers on Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang), a 13-year-old Chinese Canadian girl torn between being the dutiful daughter to her mother (Sandra Oh) and navigating the chaos of adolescence. But her life gets turned upside-down when she discovers she turns into a giant red panda if she gets too excited.

‘Never Have I Ever’ Cast Reflects on Hollywood’s Treatment of Women of Color

Never Have I Ever Season 2 is finally out and receiving the love it definitely deserves. The series picks up after the first season with Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) being thrown in a love triangle between Ben (Jaren Lewison) and Paxton (Darren Barnet). Although the trailer focuses on Devi’s love life, the story behind the second season is much deeper than just teenage love and lust. Still dealing with the grief of losing her father, Devi deals with school, her mother’s potential love life, and the idea of the new Indian girl in school taking her spot in the all-white school.

‘Never Have I Ever’ Charms as it Deals with Grief and Growing Up

Never Have I Ever returns this week for its sophomore season, and it seems like our protagonist, Indian American teenager Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), has not learned her lesson from last season on how to be a better person. As shown in the trailers, the second season starts with Devi having to deal with two romantic suitors — Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet) and Ben Gross (Jared Lewison) — and attempting to juggle them both. Of course we know it will lead to heartbreak for the trio and leaves Devi in a really difficult place trying to make things right. There were many times I felt aggravated watching Devi make mistake after mistake and felt like she was never really growing as a person. The thing is, nobody is perfect and as annoying as Devi is when mistakes are made, Never Have I Ever still finds a way to make it as charming and relatable as possible.

‘Never Have I Ever’ Season 2 Trailer Ups the Stakes

With the events from last season of Never Have I Ever, we last left Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) making out with Ben (Jaren Lewison) in the car post-scattering her dad’s ashes in the ocean. Paxton (Darren Barnet) was also trying to get ahold of Devi to tell her how he really felt about her. This season, we see Devi trying to figure out her feelings for the two.
