Hollywood Legend Carl Weathers Breaks Down ‘The Mandalorian’ and High Magistrate Karga

Very few names have persisted in the medium of film and television the way Carl Weathers’ name has. From playing Apollo Creed in the first four Rocky films, to hunting Predators with Schwarzenegger, playing golf with Happy Gilmore, and now ruling over a planet in a galaxy far, far away, Weathers’ name and reputation as one of the greatest genre franchise stars on the planet cannot be disputed.

‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 is Off to Bold New Adventures

Star Wars has always been more than a space opera. It mixes in different genres from action-adventure to space westerns. It even takes inspiration from the great Akira Kurosawa. And The Mandalorian brings a lot of what we love about Star Wars and throws in a brand-new story that doesn’t have much to do with the Skywalker saga.

Everything We Know About ‘The Mandalorian’

Back when it was first announed that Jon Favreau was getting his own Star Wars franchise, I went and created a whole line of Pod Save America inspired t-shirts at our merch store. Turns out Lucasfilm had turned over its first live action Star Wars series to the director of Iron Man and not President Obama’s former speechwriter-turned-podcaster. For the last several months, no one knew what Favreau’s mysterious show was going to be about. Until now.

My Thoughts on Dope

[I wanted to write this reflection the weekend of its release. I decided that I needed a little more time because the film hit home in too many ways and I needed some space from it to get a better handle on how I wanted to approach it. This will not be a typical review, nor will it be an endorsement — despite my endorsing the film whole-heartedly. I have no idea what this is, but I needed to get it out.]

Hip-hop is fandom. While it may not be explicitly geek/nerd culture, it is fandom of the highest order. If anyone chooses to refute this, they aren’t being intellectually or culturally honest. Never has this connection been so blatantly displayed than in Rick Famuyiwa’s 2015 gem of a film, Dope. [I have a lot more to say about this. Watch this space in the next month or two]
