NOC Review: ‘Doom Patrol’ Season 2 – Eclectic Boogaloo

The Doom Patrol is back! Now I think we can all agree, the first season was a hell of a trip. Mr. Nobody breaking the fourth wall every episode, the excessive F-bombs, dimensions coming out of donkey butts, giant eyes in the sky, sentient streets, and beard-eating metahumans — all a weird, insane delight to see. For my money, no show in the history of superhero shows has ever gotten away with the go-for-broke, bizarre, random delights Doom Patrol Season One has brought us, whilst still staying as close to the mind-expanding ideas of Grant Morrison and his run on the book. So upon the premiere of its second season, fans are eagerly wondering whether or not the group of insane writers will continue the train of volatile craziness introduced in Season One. To ease the minds of those sitting on pins and needles to find out, the answer is a resounding yes!

NOC Reviews Spectre: Playing it Safe with Bond

Spectre wasn’t the disaster some reviewers claim but it’s certainly nowhere close to Casino Royale (a film I consider one of the greatest Bond films of all time behind Goldfinger, License to Kill, and For Your Eyes Only).

The problem with Spectre is the similar problem with much of mainstream franchise cinema: “safe” stories with play-it-safe-writing that reduces the cinematic experience to a minor distraction from a busy week instead of an exploration of ideas.

NOC Recaps Penny Dreadful: Attack of the Naked Witch Groupies

This will be the very first NOC recap for the Showtime horror show Penny Dreadful, which just premiered its second season on Sunday. And what a relief it is to have it back as I very much miss this delightfully dark show with freaks and ghouls that have a penchant for murder. For those who are just catching on, season one focused mostly on revealing dark secrets for the main cast, which includes Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton), Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadyway), his creation Caliban aka The Creature (Rory Kinnear), and Ethan Chandler (Josh Harnett) whose big secret was that he’s a hairy rampaging werewolf.
