May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a cause for celebration of these many diverse communities. But far too often, many who champion this month have belied and ignored specific groups within this collective, often presenting a limited scope of who counts as “Asian” or “Asian American” in this collective consciousness.

Super Smack is Shamelessly Asian American in “Orange Chicken!”

It was a pleasant surprise to see an email invite from Super Smack inviting me to the listening party for his next single. It had been a few weeks since I had last seen him but I heard his voice everywhere. “Cute!” and “Grind!” started to show up in rotation through my TikTok For You Page and several of my personal friends would remark hearing the songs in their feeds as well. It was no denying his songs were picking up traction, but what exactly was resonating with the listeners? I finally had the perfect opportunity to find out.

AAPI Supernatural Recommendations for Fans of Disney’s ‘So Weird’

It’s been well documented that I am a fan of the ‘90’s Disney Channel original series, So Weird; a paranormal drama that balances out both the supernatural and tender-hearted moments of a grieving family. But when you’ve watched the same episodes over and over again, you can’t help but ache for something new, but with a similar vibe. To balance out the desire of also wanting to see more stories created by and starring people that look more like you can make for a grand adventure.

HBO Max Celebrates AAPI History Month with ‘See Us’

As a proud FilipinX / Asian American / Nerd of Color, I am often asked about my culture and upbringing and dependent on how I’m feeling that day… that situation can go many ways; BUT, for AAPI Heritage Month, I am loud and I AM PROUD. However, it must be said that this past year and a half has been a rather difficult one for our community. The ugly face that is racism became even more pronounced and we now rally under the banner of #StopAsianHate. Life has become traumatic for many of us… but for me and others I know, it only deepened our pride, because we know that WE BELONG. We have fought hard for us to be here and we will not allow the negativity to deter us. Our existence is our resistance. You are going to SEE US.

The Year of Keanu Reeves

If you have been a human being with an internet connection over the last several weeks, you may have noticed Keanu Reeves is kind of everywhere. From John Wick toppling the Avengers at the box office and a scene-stealing turn as Ali Wong’s lover in  Always Be My Maybe, to taking fans’ breaths away at E3, Keanu’s career is hotter than ever. Like a Keannussance, if you will. But why now? I’m going to attempt to retrace each milestone in the timeline of why 2019 is the year of Keanu.

This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill — the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill — you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.
