Why this ‘American Sikh’ Cosplays as Captain America

Animator and cosplayer Vishavjit Singh has experienced tremendous trauma in his life. He survived a genocide against Sikh people in India as a young boy, and after he and his family fled to the US, he’s constantly experienced racism and Islamophobia (despite not being Muslim) in the pre- and post-9/11 era. Despite all of this, he remains an optimist for people to treat each other better, and found through his regular cosplaying as Captain America that he could somehow achieve that. But what drew him to this initially?

Kickstart This: Marc Bernardin’s Directorial Debut, ‘Splinter’

Writer, and Friend of the NOC, Marc Bernardin had always hoped to direct a movie by the time he turned 50. Well, now he’s gone and done it!

Though he has already exceeded his original Kickstarter goal in less than 12 hours, Bernardin’s directorial debut, the short film Splinter, still has a month to go to raise even more money!

#GoldOpen Teams Up with AMC Theatres to Promote New Majority

Back in October, when I interviewed Gold Open co-creator Bing Chen on the Southern Fried Asian podcast, he teased a new iteration of the movement established to promote groundbreaking Asian American films like GookCrazy Rich Asians, and Burning. This morning, they revealed what the next stage of Gold Open will look like. In addition to a partnership with AMC theaters to help “streamline group movie-going, theatre buyouts and bulk regular-price ticket purchasing through a ticket buying system,” the Gold Open system will expand and be applied to media from groups dubbed “the New Majority,” i.e., women, the African diaspora, Latinx communities, and LGBTQ+ artists.

Kickstart This: Jamie Noguchi’s Kitsune Hoodie

The Kitsune Hoodie is a zip-up hoodie featuring an all-over printed fox spirit design.

Like many web cartoonists, I occasionally design shirts to supplement my income. But I’ve never been very good at coming up with the clever designs or mashups that you might see on popular t-shirt sites. My shirt designs tend to feature strange creatures.

Kickstart This: Meraki Cosplay Expo

What makes for great cosplay pictures? It’s when an amazing costume is photographed in an interesting and unique location. However, most of the time cosplayers and photographers can only meet up at conventions. While cons are great for seeing friends and buying things, they are not always the best locations for cosplay photo shoots. Concrete walls at crowded convention centers are not satisfying backgrounds for the costumes cosplayers have worked so hard on. There are conventions that have tried to use backdrops but they often result in pictures that look flat, as if they were taken at a mall. Some people have been able to afford to host kickstarters to allow them to do on locations shoots, but wouldn’t it be great if more people had access to such an opportunity?

Mobility for Justice

Hey everyone! If you’ve been on this ride with me for a while you know that I have always been super busy and active — going to as many conventions as I can, making 15 costumes a year, taking every opportunity I can get. Just trying to live my life to the fullest.

And now I’m working for Marvel Universe Live — traveling to a new city every week for the next two years and seeing so many things and learning as much as I can along the way.

It’s been fun, exhilarating, exhausting. And painful. As you might already know, I am permanently disabled and have been for a long time. I use canes and a manual wheelchair to get around, but because I have severe pain and debilitating damage all over my body, using these mobility aids hurts me and makes it difficult to do my job.

Tanuj Chopra’s Chee and T Told with G.I. Joe Figures

Chee and T is the newest film by my homie Tanuj Chopra (Punching at the Sun, Nice Girls Crew) and is currently being funded on Indiegogo. With a little less than two weeks left in the campaign, his crew has pulled out all the stops to reach their $75,000 goal. Right now, the project is about 65% of the way there, but they need one last push to get it over the top.

So what better way to raise awareness for their movie than getting a bunch of classic G.I. Joe action figures and reenacting the movie?
