Reflections on Watching Shorts at the Hawai’i International Film Festival as a New Filmmaker

I’ve been covering the Hawai’i International Film Festival (HIFF) for several years for The Nerds of Color, yet haven’t attended its festival in-person since 2019. When I obtained many ticket vouchers from serving on the screening committee for its 45th iteration, I realized before me I had a really good excuse to actually travel back to Honolulu this year to attend it. Little did I expect at the time of starting in the committee back in March that by the time I flew out to O’ahu, I would also be attending this year’s festival as a new filmmaker.

‘DÌDI’ to Make its Los Angeles Premiere at the 40th VC Film Fest

Visual Communications (VC) has announced a new Special Presentation program is being added to the VC FILM FEST lineup: the Los Angeles Premiere of the Narrative Feature DÌDI (弟弟). Directed by Sean Wang, the narrative feature follows an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy who learns what his family can’t teach him: how to skate, how to flirt, and how to love your mom. The film, which made its world premiere at Sundance, will be Wang’s fourth film at the fest.

Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ to Close Out 76th Cannes Film Festival

Pixar Animation Studios has announced that Elemental, their 27th feature film, will close out the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 27, 2023. Elemental will be the fourth Pixar film to close the festival, after Up, Inside Out, and Soul.

Date for Viet Film Fest 2021 Free Virtual Launch Party is Set

The Vietnamese American Arts and Letters Association (VAALA) is hosting a free virtual launch party for the Viet Film Fest 2021 on Thursday, September 23. The evening will include the debut of the highly anticipated Viet Film Fest 2021 festival trailer, and the announcement of all the official curated film sets as well as nominations for Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, Best Actor, and Best Actress. The event, which celebrates Vietnamese voices and stories in cinema, will be hosted by The Song Collective co-founder Carolina Do, with performances by rapper Suboi, Nodey, Avin Lu, and Thang Dao.

New Character Posters for ‘Dune’ Drop Ahead of Trailer’s Release

It’s a great time to be a fan of Dune. The long awaited big-budget adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal classic is at long last coming this fall. Tickets Drop for IMAX First-Looks at ‘Dune’

The movie event of the year is approaching! That’s right! Dune is finally coming out, this year, on October 1! I’m so thrilled for this movie, and have been for the past year, given the pandemic prevented us from seeing it. Everything that we’ve seen so far has been astonishing to say the least.

Well now, we’ll finally to see some of the amazing footage — the new trailer no less — on the biggest screen possible as this morning IMAX and WB dropped this tweet, advertising an IMAX exclusive event to showcase never-before-seen footage at your local IMAX theater on July 21-22.

Netflix’s ‘The Starling’ Will Premiere at TIFF 2021

The new drama comes from director Theodore Melfi and stars Melissa McCarthy, Kevin Kline, Daveed Diggs, Timothy Olyphant, and Chris O’Dowd. Netflix has just released new first look images and the synopsis for the upcoming film, as well as the fact that it will premiere at TIFF this year. TIFF 2021 will run from September 9-18.

ATX Festival 2021: Black TV Creatives Discuss What Still Needs to Be Done in the Industry
