Conversing of Fear and Face-Huggers with ‘Alien: Romulus’ Star Aileen Wu

I’ve had the most fortunate pleasure of speaking with the amazing cast members of this year’s sci-fi blockbuster hit, Alien: Romulus throughout the year. In fact, I’ll never forget my first interview with them at San Diego Comic Con this past July! The only regret I had, was not being able to speak with the terrific Aileen Wu, who plays the tragic Navarro, since she wasn’t able to make it to San Diego.

Bursting Out of ‘Alien: Romulus’ with Breakout Star David Jonsson

You may recall this past July that I had the esteemed pleasure of interviewing the full cast of Alien: Romulus at San Diego Comic Con. Hands down, one of the greatest highlights of my year. Now of course we hadn’t seen the film at that point. But now that it has become one of the biggest and most successful blockbusters of the year (critically and commercially), I find myself honored once more to this time sit down one-on-one with the film’s breakout star, (the man playing my absolute favorite character from the film, Andy) the incredible David Jonsson!

In just eleven years, the man who made, perhaps, the best horror reimagining in years (2013’s Evil Dead) and the terrific modern day thriller, Don’t Breathe, has now put his stamp on the Alien franchise with a stand-alone chapter, Alien: Romulus. And by the looks of it, the franchise will be all the better for it!

Track Commentary: “Prometheus”

All this week, I’ll be doing track-by-track commentary on the new EP. You should go grab the new EP at my bandcamp site, PHYSICAL COPIES OF THE CD WILL ONLY BE FOR SALE ON MY SITE UNTIL END-OF-DAY FRIDAY. If you want a copy of it, get it now, or get it at a show.

Believe it or not, the concept of this song was formed from this webcomic as much as it is based on the actual myth of Prometheus. There’s a loose fire theme on this album, that I’ll get to in about two songs in much more detail, but it was a beat that needed a concept, and a song that needed guests on it. And it’s really fascinating when you see how Sulfur and Ran both take the idea and make it their own. Sulfur, with his sense of humor that covers up the resentment towards God in his character; Ran with his talking of legacy and obligation, the chain metaphor taken to its logical conclusion. I really didn’t have much of a road map for this song, and I really ended up loving this track.

Genius: The Controversy of Creation

by Afua Richardson

I wanted the opportunity to voice the reasons for the design of the cover for a comic book by Marc Bernardin and Adam Freeman entitled Genius. Before the book’s release, it has already been the subject of many heated conversations. Some feel offended that a black character being celebrated for her tactical Genius, is displayed nearly nude on a floor with caution tape loosely bound around her. They think  the cover is over sexualized and offensive. Some feel it’s a poor representation of the book and black women as a whole, without ever having read it.

Others have their burdens of color on their shoulders because of the past suffering of blacks, its subsequent plots and the negative portrayal in mainstream media being so prevalent, that anything slightly resembling that, is tarred and feathered in the digital town square. Where I can understand why this may be the case, I’d like the opportunity to explain who I am and why I’ve made this. If you then feel I should be hung on the proverbial cross for doing this, c’est la vie. I have spoken my mind and created something without apology or retraction. Not everyone will like my work. But I won’t have it misrepresented by people who don’t understand it.

I warn you, there are spoilers in this. So if you prefer not to know the twists and turns, I’d wait until the end of the month after the book has reached its completion. Otherwise, journey forth, brave soul.
