HapaMama Goes Behind the Scenes at Pixar

A few weeks ago, I was in California on business and stayed in a hotel in Emeryville, just outside Oakland. Emeryville also happens to be home to the most successful animation house in the world: Pixar Studios. Even though the studio headquarters was just a stone’s throw from my hotel, I was unable to go beyond the front gate (which is still cool, by the way) because Pixar isn’t typically open to the general public. However, friend of the NOC Grace Hwang Lynch — the creator of the awesome blog HapaMama — got an all-expenses paid trip to see what life is like on the other side of that gate!

Octavia’s Brood is Touring the Northwest

ImageA few months ago, I wrote a piece for Nerds of Color called Growing Octavia’s Brood: The Science Fiction Social Justice Created. It focused on the genesis of the anthology, Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction Stories From Social Justice Movements, an upcoming collection of sci fi short stories written by organizers and activists.

We are excited to announce we will be doing a Northwest Tour at the end of February! Though Octavia’s Brood won’t be out until the summer, my co-editor adrienne maree brown and I are excited to do a series of readings, writing workshops, organizing workshops, and presentations based on Octavia Butler, science fiction, social change, and the anthology.

If you happen to be in Overland Park, KS tonight, head on over to Elite Comics for their 20th anniversary bash. The party also coincides with the launch of the Middle Of Nowhere Comic Store Tour featuring our very own resident nerd rappers: WarRock and Tribe.

The Middle of Nowhere Comic Store Tour

Next week, our man Adam WarRock will be hitting the road once again. This time, he’s got a brand new album to promote and a spiffy profile in the UK newspaper The Guardian to boot. Adam won’t be alone on the tour either, as he will be joined by a few friends (some of which might be familiar to you readers of The Nerds of Color).

After a brief swing through the South (namely, Louisiana and Texas) to close out November, WarRock will hit up the Midwest with our very own Tribe One through out December!

Look for more formal announcements from Adam later in the week. In the meantime, check out the current list of dates and venues after the jump. And go order The Middle of Nowhere if you haven’t already!
