Inside the Madness of ‘Joker,’ a Conversation with Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix
Earlier this month, The Nerds of Color, along with several other members of the press, were invited to partake in the madness that is Joker, with a screening of the film and mini-panel with director Todd Phillips (The Hangover trilogy, War Dogs, Old School) and the Clown Prince of Crime himself, Joaquin Phoenix. Together they tackled what it was like to put this project together, and about what it is that separates this film from so many previous comic book adaptations. Here’s what they had to say. (NOTE: Possible light spoilers ahead! Be warned!)

Opinion: The Gillis-SNL problem
By Brian Chu
We were so close. So close to having a genuinely positive and momentous news story about Saturday Night Live hiring its first cast member of Chinese descent in its 45-year history. And then, Shane Gillis ruined it. Ruined it with his reminder that no matter how much we like to think America has progressed in addressing diversity, the undercurrent of racism is never far behind.
Hard NOC Life: Crazy Rich Legacy
One year after Crazy Rich Asians was released to the world, Keith and Dominic look back at the film’s legacy on this week’s Hard NOC Life.
NOC Review: ‘Hustlers’ is No Scam
To put it in TV terms, director Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers is perfect for viewers who liked the crafty chaos of Walter White and the motherly desperation of Good Girls. The sexy crime dramedy stars Constance Wu (Dorothy/Destiny) and Jennifer Lopez (Ramona) as New York strippers who, in the wake of the 2008 recession, must find a new way to make ends meet when dancing isn’t enough.
Return to The Overlook Hotel in the New Trailer for ‘Doctor Sleep’
Earlier this week, Warner Bros. dropped the trailer for Mike Flanagan’s (Haunting of Hill House, Gerald’s Game) adaptation of Stephen King’s sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep!
The vibe looks creepy and Ewan McGregor looks great as a now-adult Danny Torrance. If the movie is up to the standard of all of Flanagan’s other works, I think WB’s looking at a winner. Check out the trailer here:

It is suddenly on her and her two friends Peng (Albert Tsai) and Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) to get this Yeti — whom Yi calls Everest — home to the Himalayas, even with the scientists on their tail.

NOC Review: Rian Johnson Slays with ‘Knives Out’
On the morning after his 85th birthday party, acclaimed mystery writer Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead in his study, a cut carotid and blood splashed everywhere. A Los Angeles Theatre Review: ‘Hannah and the Dread Gazebo’
It’s not often we here at The Nerds of Color review theatre performances but once in a while, there comes a production so wonderful, magical, and full of heart that it must be told for all to know. The Middle Geeks Episode 4: ‘Capernaum’ and Facing Hard Truths
In the latest installment of The Middle Geeks, we review Nadine Labaki’s 2018 heartbreaking masterpiece, Capernaum. Mae and Swara reflect on the state of conflict in the region, how institutions fail children, immigrants, and the most vulnerable, and how generational trauma affects us as Middle Eastern-Americans. It’s a hard but necessary set of discussions to have. On much lighter topics, we discuss the slew of news from D23, and express our dismay at a change in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow‘s upcoming season.
(We start our Capernaum discussion at the 32:51 mark.)
