Laufey’s “Madwoman” Music Video is a Wasian Celebration

Hot off her Coachella performance and A Matter of Time: The Final Hour deluxe edition release, Laufey, the Chinese-Icelandic genre-defying Grammy award winner, has revealed the music video for “Madwoman.” Framed through a dreamy 1960s bossa nova-inspired aesthetic, the video feels like more than just a visual flex. It is a deliberate gathering of Wasian talent across music, film, television, and sports, turning a buzzy release into a larger statement about visibility.

Stan Walker is a singer from New Zealand. Rising to prominence through Australian Idol, he has since gone on to release seven albums; the most recent one in 2022, All In. In 2023, he was summoned by director Ava DuVernay, who, after being shown a video of him doing a cover of Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam” by her producing partner, asked Walker to do the song for her latest film, Origin; which tells the story of how journalist Isabel Wilkerson researched the caste systems in the histories of the United States, Germany, and India, for her 2020 book, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.

It just wouldn’t be a Disney animated musical with its signature villain song to go with the protagonist’s “I Want” song. Today, Disney has released a snippet of their newest villain song, “This is the Thanks I Get,” as sung by the benevolent and very conceited King Magnfico (Chris Pine), which can be heard only in the highly anticipated Wish.

AAPI Supernatural Recommendations for Fans of Disney’s ‘So Weird’

It’s been well documented that I am a fan of the ‘90’s Disney Channel original series, So Weird; a paranormal drama that balances out both the supernatural and tender-hearted moments of a grieving family. But when you’ve watched the same episodes over and over again, you can’t help but ache for something new, but with a similar vibe. To balance out the desire of also wanting to see more stories created by and starring people that look more like you can make for a grand adventure.

Infinity Rain: An Avengers / Prince Mash-Up, Annotated

Note: I made this with the intent to commemorate the third anniversary of Prince’s passing on April 21, 2016. Just so happens, Avengers: Endgame premieres this week on April 25 (if you’re reading this blog you probably have heard about that). The premise was to re-contextualize last year’s rather lengthy Avengers: Infinity War, set to all the songs on 1984’s Purple Rain, in the order they appear on that definitive work of pop music. The thinking was, in terms of emotional/dramatic arcs, Purple Rain the album is more coherent and composed than Infinity War (I wouldn’t make the same claim if we were talking about Purple Rain the film, but in this case we aren’t).

See With Your Ears, Hear With Your Eyes

My lovely, amazing and infinitely patient wife recently pointed out to me that I’ve been gone more than I’ve been home since we got married in December. There’s been a lot going on lately, hasn’t there? I just got home from three straight months of touring, and I’m leaving tomorrow to go to my little brother’s wedding and then I’m flying into Austin, Texas for my first official showcase at South By Southwest with a bunch of my bestest nerdcore friends like Doc Awk, Jesse Dangerously, Adam WarRock, MC Lars, Schaffer the Darklord, Random, MC Frontalot, and more. It’s going to be nuts.

Before I head out again, I’ve got a whole slew of new stuff to share with you.

Boom! Pow! Smash! Adam WarRock Raps About Batman

This morning, Newsarama debuted the video for “B.S.F.X.,” the lead single off Adam WarRock‘s forthcoming studio album The Middle of Nowhere.

Since WarRock is such an avowed Marvel head (as if his rap name didn’t already give it away), songs in the key of DC are few and far between. But from the Watchmenesque album cover to his latest single, it seems Adam isn’t just exclusive to “the 616.” So when he drops a track about the Dark Knight, you know I’m about it!
