When your new movie sequel needs to remix an iconic theme song, who ya gonna call? ATARASHII GAKKO! With Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire set to premiere next week, the J-Pop group has recorded their own official version of Ray Parker Jr.’s classic “Ghostbusters” for the Japanese release of the sequel.
Joining Run D.M.C. and Fallout Boy as the only acts to do an iteration of “Ghostbusters,” AG’s is the first non-English one.
The official video shows the girls — Suzuka, Mizyu, Rin, and Kanon — in modified versions of their traditional school uniforms — a visual callback to Stay Puft, perhaps — while also sporting proton packs and GB jumpsuits.
While there’s no word on whether AG’s theme song will appear in the movie or soundtrack, the music video is available worldwide on their official YouTube channel.
Dubbed “Ghostbusters: Frozen Summer” — after what Frozen Empire is being called in Japan, the song essentially translates the classic lyrics “I ain’t afraid of no ghost” while also featuring AG’s signature uptempo style, including a sly reference to their most recent hit, “Tokyo Calling,” in Rin’s second rap interlude.
As always, the music video highlights the group’s intricate choreography interspersed with clips from the film — some which have not been revealed before.
Whether the song is included in the film or not, AG! has solidified its place as part of the franchise’s legacy.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is set to release on March 22 (and on March 29 in Japan).
