‘Michael’ is an Ode to the King of Pop

It’s a late May afternoon at The Paseo on Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena, CA. I’m about to see Michael three weeks after its premiere. Though initially put off by the fact that I was about to see the film later than I would’ve liked to, I shake this pessimism off because I’m about to watch a biopic of Michael Jackson, just mere steps from the Pasadena Convention Center where the film was shot, and more importantly, where the King of Pop debuted himself as a solo performer in 1984 at Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, and Forever.

The Wiz Live! Wrap Up: Brand New Day

I had so much fun watching NBC’s airing The Wiz: Live! on network television. Having grown up with the original, I was curious to see how the new version would stand up. And now I’m going to slip into gush mode because you guys. YOU GUYS. IT WAS AWESOME. We sooooo needed this, especially in this time where most news about blacks are seeded with shootings, protests, micro-aggressions, and fear. The Wiz: Live! was a welcome — and very much needed —  celebration of black culture in all its forms.

Remember the Time When Ancient Egypt was White?

Because Hollywood never learns its lesson, Summer 2016 is going to bring yet another whitewashed movie about Ancient Egypt. Late last week Lionsgate shocked the world and unveiled character posters for God of Egypt, a movie that, until now, literally no one had heard about. Then yesterday, they dropped an even more ridiculous trailer.
