Bringing ‘Annabelle’ Home with Director Gary Dauberman
It’s been a long journey for America’s favorite possessed doll, but after 6 years and 5 movies, Annabelle is finally coming home, courtesy of director Gary Dauberman. While the rise and creation of The Conjuring universe has been rightfully attributed to mastermind, James Wan, arguably Dauberman’s work has had just as great an impact on this franchise. Dauberman’s first script in this universe was the first Annabelle, and he’s stayed with the franchise ever since, penning Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, and now Annabelle Comes Home.
However unlike his previous experiences, it’s now his turn to take the reins, as Annabelle Comes Home serves as Dauberman’s directorial debut. In honor of the highly anticipated horror sequel’s release this week, the Nerds of Color had a chance to sit with Dauberman, and discuss the process of directing, conjuring up scares, and the notion of sisterhood within the horror genre. Here’s what he had to say:

Spider-Man, Pokémon, and Star-Crossed Lovers: Mixed Race Characters Take the Lead
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the films, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Detective Pikachu, and The Sun Is Also a Star.
Although Loving v. Virginia officially abolished all remaining anti-miscegenation laws in the United States in 1967, it really hasn’t been until recently where the portrayals of mixed race characters and interracial couples on the big screen have improved significantly. Within the last six months alone, several films have had either mixed race characters as the leads or interracial relationships as the central focus. An added dimension to some of them is that apart from some of the characters being of the younger generation, the focus wasn’t on their race(s). That didn’t, however, stop these films from acknowledging their backgrounds. While it’s good that films like Aquaman are out there that get really real about being mixed, not all mixed race protagonists need to go on a journey of self discovery to that extent.

The Year of Keanu Reeves
If you have been a human being with an internet connection over the last several weeks, you may have noticed Keanu Reeves is kind of everywhere. From John Wick toppling the Avengers at the box office and a scene-stealing turn as Ali Wong’s lover in Always Be My Maybe, to taking fans’ breaths away at E3, Keanu’s career is hotter than ever. Like a Keannussance, if you will. But why now? I’m going to attempt to retrace each milestone in the timeline of why 2019 is the year of Keanu.
NOC Goes to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: Tips and Tricks for Your Visit (Part I)
August 15, 2015. That was the date that Disney announced at their biennial D23 Expo that it was going to fulfill the fantasies of every Star Wars fan in the world. They were going to bring the universe George Lucas had created to life, and give us all the opportunity to become a part of the world of Luke, Han, Chewie, and Leia, and allow us to finally live our adventure too. At the time the implications and details behind all of that were top secret, and for years speculation among fans became rampant. What would the rides be like? Could we drink Blue Milk? Would there be a Cantina? Can you become a Jedi? And most importantly can we fly the Millennium Falcon?

NOC Review: Dull ‘Phoenix’ Barely Rises Above Subpar
Sometimes when the public gets hold of bad buzz regarding a studio tentpole, they end up pleasantly surprised by the result of the film. Wonder Woman was at one point considered to be “a mess” thereby worrying audiences before release. Aladdin was getting blasted online, and Disney was getting ready to take another Solo-sized bath. However, Wonder Woman went on to become the DCEU’s best reviewed film and a huge box office hit, and Aladdin went on to positive audience reviews, and grossed a healthy $100M in four days, two weekends ago. Nope, negative buzz isn’t always reflective of the final product itself… Unless you’re Dark Phoenix. Then it’s entirely true.

NOC Review: ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Review: King Me!
I’d like to start the review by posing an analogy: Why do we go to and love John Wick movies? Is it because of the story or character? Hell no! We go because we want to see Keanu capping people left and right with well-choreographed action sequences of hardcore violence and badassery. And when we get that, we appreciate and shower praise on a film like that because our expectations are met (89% on RT). The filmmakers know consciously what kind of movie we want, and that’s what they give us.
Therefore, if we are going to shower praise over John Wick for delivering what we expect and what it promises, we must do the same for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. For me, this is a perfect summer blockbuster through and through, and the first time an American-made, big-budget Godzilla movie genuinely felt like a real Godzilla movie! In other words, this movie delivers what it promises — on what it’s supposed to be — and more!
